Oh the defense is obviously the bigger problem for sure,  I just think they need A LOT of different starters to expect to become a road-worthy playoff defense.   I don't expect Milano or Douglas back but if they are I don't expect them to play as well as they did in the playoffs, even.   Daquan and Taron will likely be back(because of difficult contracts) with further diminishing effectiveness due to age.  Both safeties should be upgraded and not sure Bishop is an answer at either spot.   Hopefully they can get one more good year out of Benford before he has to medically retire or falls apart.  Elam might not be back.   It's a patchwork, aging and injury riddled/prone bunch and maybe a Garrett would cover a lot for that but I don't think it will be enough, still.   As much as McD can't seem to put together an elite defense I do think he can make another middling one out of chewing gum and popsicle sticks if necessary.

 

I think the last two games really exposed the Bills passing game though.   Nobody ate because defense's tighten up on JAG's in the postseason.   That's when you need stars to step up.   The Bills don't have those in the receiving/TE corps.  

 

And I will say that the Bills defense stepped up in the playoffs as well.   They were trash in-season.  Played much better against Denver and Baltimore.......until they lost Rapp.   Then lost Benford in KC.   I mean, if Howie Roseman was the Bills GM they could probably fix the D fairly quick with their limited chips but our personnel department hasn't proven to be at their level yet.   Given Beane's track record they aren't going to sign some dude like Baun on the cheap and turn him into an NFL DPOY candidate overnight, etc..  Might have to hire Doug Whaley back to run pro personnel and get a Lorax. 

Milano seems harder to move on from than Jones …. His dead cap is $17m next season …

I would be all for Metcalfe .., hopefully for cheaper rhan the two seconds …. He is only under contract one more year …

 

See if you can get a 7th for Elam …

 

Garrett would be yuge .., but I don’t think they will give up the assets required

Pass rush has to be addressed in the draft. It’s going to cost multiple first round picks to land either Crosby or Garrett. Khalil Mack is an unrestricted free agent so I would definitely look at him.

 

Groot play this year didn’t earn him a contract extension play this year IMO. Von Miller was actually one of our best edge defenders this year but his contract is really bad for a guy only playing 30% of snaps. I would prefer Von as a DE3 over Epenesa for sure but he’s gotta restructure his deal and I don’t think he’s gonna do that two years in a row.

I would probably stick with Elam if all they could get was a 7th but as I've mentioned before I'd look to Dallas to see if they want to do a "bust for bust" trade with the Bills getting DT Mazi Smith.   Elam's dad was a Jerry Jones favorite so he might be down for a Kaiir reclamation project.   Mazi Smith has been lousy in his first two years but, like Elam, he has the athletic talent to hope there is more there.   Bills need a 1 tech and he's giant and athletic.

with the benefit of hindsight, I’d trade every single pick in last years draft (that is, Coleman/Bishop/Carter/Davis/etc…..) for one of those guys.

I would do this trade, Elam just doesn’t fit what they want to do here and we need more size up front

I don't like the scheme to your point, but I think it's mostly lack of talent on the D line.

Von in 2022 was ripping it before he tore his ACL.

Allen needs a redo of his contract. Extending him is not a likely strategy.

Good shout. He wasn’t great this season but he’s shown the be of quality the years before.  There’s a few decent options.

• Moehrig
• Hufanga

 

 

Hufanga would be the only hesitation to after imo and that’s solely due to injury history.

What does disaster mean?  A first year DC that has shown his ability to adjust every week shows a lot of success.  Most takeaways for defense shows success too.  Now obviously, he's not perfect.  The run D needs some help and he needs to figure out first drive TDs but I think he has done well especially with some of the personnel

he was ok given what he had to work with  The safeties suck ,the corners are slow and Milano being out didn't  help and we got 99 year old Von Miller out there to justify Beane's job.  On top of all that the scheme sucks and McDermott wont change it  Better to have a high risk high reward defense that tries to take teams off the field quick than the endless bend don't break wait for a mistake crap  Tops qbs don't make a lot of mistakes especially when you don't pressure them.
