First of all, I think that calling people "dumb" because they have an opinion about this one topic is a bit much. Second, those of us who can think outside the box can come up with other possibilities, such as the marketing value of Taylor Swift and how she alone will increase viewership and advertising revenues, but that's ok. I won't label you as "dumb" because you fail to see this as being possible. 3 3 Quote
zow2 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I don't think the NFL is rigged. I don't think the refs are openly cheating. However, I've felt for many years that the refs are subconsciously biased towards the home teams, especially in the playoffs. A lot of Bills fans probably don't keep score on this but there's been some questionable calls and non-calls in Bills playoff home games that have benefited us. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it just is. Kansas City has hosted a ton of playoff games, so I do think they've had a bunch of "reffing" go their way. Chris Jones lined up in the neutral zone on a few short yardage plays. I'll be interested to see if stuff like that is enforced on a neutral field in the SB. Quote

Their bias has been well documented. Read Scorecasting by Tobias Moskowitz. But I suspect their bias isn't just unconscious. With billions of dollars hanging on the spread, wouldn't at least some interested parties try to persuade them to influence the game, even in a limited way? Think of a) how many highly motivated parties there are out there now with gambling legalized; b) how many ways refs can be "persuaded" to participate, the many variations of threats and bribes; c) how easy it would be for a ref to cheat; and d) how easy it would be to deny the cheating, especially with the full force of the league backing them, as well as many fans (albeit a dwindling number). All these factors add up to a high probability that at least some games have been influenced by at least one corrupt ref, with higher likelihood of playoff games with their higher stakes. As someone pointed out, cheating might not even be illegal, pushing the probability even higher. 1 Quote

You lose the integrity of the game it's a huge problem with them in bed with gambling companies. Quote

A big issue was discussed in another thread that officials often call flags on what they think happened to vs what they actually see. See Dawkins penalty against the Ravens or the two roughing the passer penalties against Houston in their playoff game. On first look or in real time they looked legit. Yet on replay if was clearly not but because the calls are non reversable it just shows the ref messed up. The league has the tool to make things right and have to a degree where coaches don't have to waste challenges on calls that the ref in the sky reverses when it can. Until the league makes all calls objective vs subjective this will continue. Quote

Then again, that won’t happen since they have free range to hold on every play if they want . Based on their 0 holding calls in the past 3 SBs (which is an insane stat line considering there is holding on every other play in the NFL) Quote

How many Super Bowls would Mahomes have won if the league, via the refs, weren't putting their thumbs on the scale? I don't care if he goes on to win ten Super Bowls. All but the first few will always carry an asterisk. One of the many disgusting aspects of the cheating, the one I'm least concerned about actually, is that it does diminish what Mahomes and the Chiefs have done. For this reason, rather than denying the cheating (which they have no part of), they should be first in line criticizing it. What cheating? 6 hours ago, Bill from NYC said: First of all, I think that calling people "dumb" because they have an opinion about this one topic is a bit much. However, then you get into the slippery slope of all plays cans be reviewed which would severely disrupt game flow. Look hard enough on any play and you can pry find a penalty in there. I think maybe adding two coaching challenges (without the possibility of losing a time out) just for penalties per game could be a nice middle ground. 7 hours ago, Bill from NYC said: First of all, I think that calling people "dumb" because they have an opinion about this one topic is a bit much. Two points- you limit the amount of reviews by making it a situation where you can miss one review but ask for second which is wrong will end your ability to get a review along with loss of time outs. I do believe the officials are simply incompetent but at what point does the separation of impact between incompetent and conspiracy become irrelevant? Quote

His "nothing to see here" this is preposterous does not dismiss my concerns and side eye looks or anyone elses. In fact, it adds fuel to the fire because if he said, yes we see missed calls, wrong calls and are doing this, this and this to be as close to perfect as possible then I'd say okay, tin foil hat off. Instead, he uses the old political, fake news line when he discusses the refs and missed/non/wrong calls. Quote
Albwan Posted February 5 Posted February 5 It's hard to win when you have one good player on the field. Yes Tom Brady won an awful lot, but the Pats always fielded a great team around him. Sorry I don't see it said much here, you can't win a Superbowl at the Dollar General. Quote

They allowed coaches to challenge PI calls a few years back and it was a disaster. Maybe they'll just make it so any personal foul is automatically reviewed upstairs and add a flopping penalty. To your second point, it's already irrelevant and the NFL needs to act aggressively to make refs full time employees and do a better job of communicating on the live broadcasts to the public about why this is or isn't a penalty. It is not about the refs being full time, if there is one issue with the refs that is most likely causing the issue is the age. Too many of them are just unable to keep up with the pace of the game, especially with the amount of rules they are supposed to call Quote

Dumb is the polite way I can put it. Who is talking about a league wide conspiracy among all refs? Talk about brain cells! Refs are pawns in a multi-billion dollar conglomerate that is the NFL. They do not make any extra money for having Taylor Swift at the games. If you think that everything is on the up and up and all of these calls going against us and for the Chiefs are a mere coincidence, more power to ya! It does seem as if milions of fans don't agree, but unlike you; I am not going to resort to name calling or insults.
