What a time to be alive! To have a pro football team to call our own AND they were Great. The players lived among the residents, traveled WNY playing basketball against local high school faculties and worked among us in the offseason. We were differently formed from our AFL brethren in that we became a great team because of our Defense and strong running game. This 5 part series brings back to life the thrill the AFL & 60’s had on WNY. This episode in particular showcases our mid 60’s title teams

Enjoy!

I watched this a few years ago. Great documentary. I've always thought a Mad Men style HBO show based on these guys trying to challenge the NFL back in the 60s would make for compelling TV. Culminating in Joe Namath's guarantee.

I always thought it was the Jets beating the Colts that led to the merger, never thought it was the Giants poaching Gogolak.

Namath’s rookie contract did shake up he world -and pro players contracts. Giants swindling Gogolak forced both sides to the bargaining table.

Didn’t the Gogolak thing set off a bidding war for players?

Yes. The Leagues started raiding everybody, signing players with years left on contracts once the AFL landed a huge TV contract with ABC.  Rozell quickly got thier teams to agree to a merger and all other new contracts were voided. Gogolak mused he should’ve got a patent on ‘Soccer Style kickers’ as the term stuck forever.
