A former coach on Sirius radio was saying that you need 9 "blue chip" players to win a SuperBowl.  Didnt really define what blue chip was, but lets say Pro Bowl calibre.  So one of the top 4 in the conference.

Who are the Bill 9?

Definite: Allen, Cook, Dawkins, Taron Johnson,

Probably:  Shakir, Rouseau, Bernard, Benford,

Maybe:  Spencer Brown,  Oliver, Milano, Kincaid, Von

Thats 9, so I guess we can win this year.

Using this year's PFF grades;

Offense:

Allen

McGovern

Kincaid [low snap count due to missing games]

Cook

Shakir

Spencer

Dion

all rank in Top 32 at their positions, theoretically could have a spot on any team in the league

Defense

Benford

Groot

Oliver

[Von] - again low snap count

That's 9-12 who could start for any team in the league.

I think von will be added back to the list after Sundays game.  He’s not a blue chip player-  but I think he’s going to bring it and be a difference maker.

brown is definitely a blue chip player.  As is Rousseau….and Ed based on his play recently.

the giants team that won over the pats in 2011 had very few blue chip guys.  they went on the road and beat san fran who had what might be the greatest (qb aside) roster i've ever seen on a football team.  we have one 2nd team all pro and 2 total pro bowlers and beat a team w 9.

this is a murky way of measuring a team IMO.  i think you need to win match ups, but we have advanced stats that tell the story better (not completely) than some guy's opinion on some general formula.  I'd say we can win the super bowl because our Run O and QB match up on everyone, and our d is willing to do enough to get our O the ball.

The Bills have a higher median skill than most teams but fewer superstars.  I think the Bills OL is the best in the league, as a unit.  They keep getting better too, peaking at the perfect time

My list pretty well matches this

The one player I missed was McGovern; somewhat ironic given where he went to school...

I'd say:

Offense: Josh Allen, Dion Dawkins, Spencer Brown, Khalil Shakir, James Cook

Defense: Taron Johnson, Christian Benford, Matt Milano (if healthy), Terrel Bernard

Spencer Brown should 100% be included. He has established himself as an elite level tackle in this league. Dawkins has only elevated his status as elite this year. Both of them are great. I'm a little iffy on Shakir and Bernard, but I think they both have the potential, and they both have a knack for making big plays in critical moments. Rousseau is a possibility, but he just doesn't get the sacks. Elite run defender, though. Oliver is another, but he is too streaky for me.

I think this Bills team’s analytics department  has cracked the code and has found a new way to win. Our top 3 receiving targets are bottom 12 in the league but our top 10 targets are number 1, and that’s how we stress defenses.

I didn’t hear the interview but if he said “Blue Chip”

I would assume he meant big time blue chip recruits coming out of high school. They did well and as good as they were supposed to do in college, got drafted and have been playing well enough in the NFL based on what their expectations were from coming out of high school as a 4 star or 5 star recruit.

He could mean something else but that is usually the only time you hear the words “ blue chip” type players talked about.

Was the former coach a college coach of NFL former coach?

could you explain this to me please?

And I don’t mind if you’re offensive, I just don’t quite get the reference - and I’d like to!

They have studs at the tackles and at center, and that means the guards nearly always have help close by.  Cyborg is young, but his performance against Jones, leads me to believe he will be elite before long.

Easy

Allen (AP), Cook (PB), Shakir (2nd in YAC by WRs 2025), Taron Johnson (AP), Dawkins (4 time PB), Brown (1 sack allowed in 2025), Groot, Milano (AP/PB), Benford (top 5 CB according to PFF) and probably Bernard.  Cooper is also a 5 time PBer.

Also McGovern, Torrence and Edwards have been elite on the interior of the OL all season as well.  We may have the best OL in the NFL.  McGovern didn't allow a sack or a hit on Josh up the middle this season.

I give a thumbs down to the idea.

For starters, a QB on the level of Allen or Mahomes counts for 2 or 3 blue chips at least.  Having blue chip players on the OL and DL is probably more effective than having blue chip players scattered around the roster.   Having quality backups is also really important.  I think that coaching counts, too.
