Pegula specifically tasked his GM with the head coaching search, and McD was hired in January. Something happened between then and the draft that caused Whaley to be fired. Call it kismet that we got an Andy Reid disciple who is great friends with Tomlin, but it happened. The Jets are going through with the same search and from the news that Glenn left without committing it's not a good sign at all, not to mention the GM interview as well.

"[Pegula] and I informed Doug this morning that we will be moving in a new direction," Bills co-owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. "We have enjoyed working with Doug. He is a good person and we want to thank him for his work and commitment to our football team. This was my decision. It was not an easy decision but I believe it's the right one for the future of the Buffalo Bills. Our search for a new general manager will begin immediately."

"The Bills also dismissed their entire scouting staff a day after the draft, with Terry Pegula announcing the decision during a news conference Sunday.

"I don't want to discuss publicly why we made the decision, the factors," Pegula said. "Doug is a good guy. He's a smart man. But we made the decision. And the reasons remain private to us and Doug."

With the connection to Detroit I wouldn't call it a stretch if Chris Spielman gets named GM since he did interview for the position earlier.

Has anyone mentioned that we fired Doug Whaley AFTER we hired McDermott?

Sorry, you did it to yourself.

Did the same people mention the plan was always for that to be Whaley's last draft and he had no real authority at the time McDermott was hired?

He was not privy to many discussions at the time.

Rodgers probably stopped reading when he saw "Aaron" and just assumed they named Rodgers HC as well.

Bills fans really clutching for straws trying to bash Aaron Glenn.  I think it is could be a great hire and dont the jets & Lions get a pick for hiring a minority?  I think it is a potential HR for them.

Not sure the Jets get one for hiring. But the Lions will definitely get one for having their guy hired.

Lions get two 3rds for sure (in 2026 and 2027), not sure Jets would get anything.

Sorry, but that is not true.

"Owner Terry Pegula, who did not take questions from reporters Friday, told WGR 550 earlier in the day that McDermott asked about the Bills' organizational structure during the interview process and that Pegula's answer was "short and sweet" on the topic.

"I told him the GM and the coach work together," Pegula said. "Obviously, Doug is sitting in the room with him while he's interviewing. So [McDermott] knows, if he's hired by this GM ... I like him. It's not like we're bringing a new GM in and hiring [McDermott] as a coach first. This GM, coach working together -- they both answer to the owners."

McDermott later confirmed that he and Whaley will report directly to Pegula, which is the same structure the Bills used under former coach Rex Ryan and one that Pegula feels is "more common than it is unusual" in the NFL."

It feels like we overvalue creativity in playcalling a bit and Aaron Glenn seems like a  do your job/nothing fancy kind of guy. He’s kind of the anti Ben Johnson in that way so it doesn’t feel exciting but that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna work out

I think you are correct but as I was typing that, WTH, the team that actually hires the minority HC or Coordinator gets, nada, doesnt seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I believe the idea behind it is you’re supposed to get compensation for developing the coaches.

Glenn is going to be a good HC IMO

Ben Johnson I am way less sure of. So much of being a HC is culture, personality, and leadership. Glenn checks all those boxes I think.

I’ve kind of always liked Glenn more as a potential head coach also tbh lol. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.  I’m sure this board will argue about it for years 😂. Interested to see who the OC ends up being

That is a reasonable assessment.  Ben's last job/game with his "creativity in playcalling" imo, helped the Lions lose.  He was trying to hard to be "special".

The league is doing well to incentivize giving these guys opportunities, while not incentivizing hiring lesser qualified coaches.

Rewarding the team that helped get their foot in the door and developed them. Not rewarding teams just for checking a box.

Good way to do it, and fair to everyone.

Zack Rosenblatt on X: "This is how various league sources think Aaron Glenn’s primary #Jets staff could play out: OC Nick Caley DC Steve Wilks ST Chris Banjo Nothing finalized and other candidates being considered — but those are viewed as top contenders for those jobs." / X

Is it any different than when they hired the great DC that Robert Saleh was in San Fran?

I’ll say this about any hot coordinator that becomes a head coach…..you better get yourself a good QB otherwise you’ll be 3 seasons and out like most of them end up being.

DC of a hot NFC team, first time head coach... pretty similar. Jets fans are banging their heads against the wall.

Yet this is exactly what happened. And in short order too. So you can imagine the rest of the answer to be just as fictitious.

I am always puzzled that the team that loses the minority coach gets extra picks, but the team that hires said minority gets squat.

IMO It should be the opposite.
