If I were a Patriots fan looking at a very promising young QB, he is NOT who I'd most want to see.

I'm not a McDaniels apologist by any stretch but it's kinda hard to say he set the team back 8-10 years when they went to the playoffs 5 straight years immediately after he left, including a Super Bowl win. Seems like they recovered pretty quickly.

Cam Newton!?!?!   Lest anyone take this post seriously,  New England ranked toward the bottom the league (high 20’s) in offense during the 2020 season.  Cam had the worst season of his professional career throwing just 8 TD to 10 INT.  This is not McDaniels fault however as Cam was cooked.  

 

The Cassell led offense of 2008 did rank around Top 10, but that was almost 20 years ago.  That’s like touting Rex Ryan for his defenses in 2009 and 2010.  
 

I will say, JMD did a nice job building a run heavy offense which help maximize the potential of Mac Jones.  But we all know what happened to that offense down the stretch.   

Maye has flashed quite a bit as a rookie.  McDaniels will have a black slate, so we’ll see what type of offense he will build.

However, I do remember reading the work of Matthew Fairburn (who transferred from BUF to NE beat) and he said Belichick was more hands on with the offense after Brady’s departure.  He was the one who signed Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry in free agency to build a big and physical offense.  
 

McDaniels did call the plays but his role as architect of that offense is questionable.

The bigger question for Pats fans who want to see Drake Maye reach his potential, is what results has McDaniel had developing QB?

Mac Jones their offense was #6 for points, I do grant that.

So I give you 1 year of "+" and 1 year of (- - ) on McDaniel with a young QB.

2nd. You guys remember Mac Jones his first year under Josh McDaniels? 

A. Top 10 offense

B. Mac Jones ended up being a pro bowl alternate

 

3. 08 pats offense was legit. You still need a QB to run your offense. I am very sure every AFC east rival thought that year Brady went down they were done. Nobody thought anything of Matt Cassell look how he ended up playing....got himself a nice contract from the chief's after playing for the pats.

Says who? He is considered around the NFL as good coordinator. What ...because a few fans say different? He has worked with other QBs other than Brady and had a top 10 offense with those QBs (already named the QBs)

 

I mean he had a top 10 offense with Mac Jones. That says a lot. Keep bring up Sam Bradford, I must have missed Bradford's incredible QB rating and seasons after McDaniels left.  He, McDaniels has adjusted the Patriots offense multiple times to adhere to the talent the Pats had through the years.

 

He changed the offense to go vertical w Moss, he developed an offense for include 2 TEs after Moss, and he put an offense together with a running QB in Cam Newton. He's good enough and qualified enough....head coach, no. OC yes.

Yep. If anything, it will sell tickets. I actually think it’s smart. These guys aren’t great on their own (I do like Vrabel though) but they function well as a unit. I’m sure Vrabel will have a direct like to Bellichick as well. Drake Maye is going to need stability & experience on the coaching side of things. Right now, his development is more important than wins or losses. He needs to keep showing progress. I came away very impressed after that first matchup against the Bills. He looked poised, accurate, and athletic. As a fan, he’s a fun player to watch all the way back to college. As a rival, I hope he busts and Brissett is starting by week 10. The Patriots definitely look like they are on the right track though. Mayo looked absolutely overwhelmed & incompetent on the side lines.

Jimmy Garoppolo is another young QB Josh McDaniels worked with. Before his injuries, Jimmy G was developing into a solid QB. Got himself a nice contract with the 49ers because of his play at QB in New England.

Since when is there a statute of limitation on a coaches resume? Especially with one as young as Josh Mcdaniels? But as you mention 08 Matt Cassell, I give you '21 Mac Jones rookie season.
