I think the jury is out on that - at best With Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, the whole "Patriots Way" support system, he was great. In St Louis, he totally stunk up the joint with a QB who had looked promising the year before (and returned to looking promising the year after); offense went from 25th to 32nd to 26th Back with Mac 'N Cheese, he was still able to plug into the last years of the "Patriots Way" So...we'll see If I were a Patriots fan looking at a very promising young QB, he is NOT who I'd most want to see. 1 Quote

New England is expected to hire Josh McDaniels as head coach Mike Vrabel's new offensive coordinator, a position he held on two previous occasions, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday. https://www.nfl.com/news/patriots-expected-to-hire-former-assistant-josh-mcdaniels-as-next-offensive-coordinator I mean this was pretty obviously their next move...no surprise here Quote

He single handedly set Denver back about 8-10 years with his piss poor drafting and overall bad decisions with that franchise.........and then couldn't understand why he got fired. ..............he then rushed back to his ole daddy Belichick's teet Disgusting I'm not a McDaniels apologist by any stretch but it's kinda hard to say he set the team back 8-10 years when they went to the playoffs 5 straight years immediately after he left, including a Super Bowl win. Seems like they recovered pretty quickly. Quote

Lest anyone take this post seriously, New England ranked toward the bottom the league (high 20’s) in offense during the 2020 season. Cam had the worst season of his professional career throwing just 8 TD to 10 INT. This is not McDaniels fault however as Cam was cooked. The Cassell led offense of 2008 did rank around Top 10, but that was almost 20 years ago. That’s like touting Rex Ryan for his defenses in 2009 and 2010. I will say, JMD did a nice job building a run heavy offense which help maximize the potential of Mac Jones. But we all know what happened to that offense down the stretch. Maye has flashed quite a bit as a rookie. McDaniels will have a black slate, so we’ll see what type of offense he will build. Quote
JohnNord Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago 8 hours ago, Beck Water said: Oh, how short are memories.....Mac Jones rookie year, the Pats went 10-7, Mac threw 22 TD passes to 13 INTs, 224 ypg passing completing 68% ....those aren't world-beating stats but they are absolutely decent for a rookie and he was runner-up OROY to Ja'Mar Chase as a result. Coming into Buffalo, there was a lot of talk about how great he was. Josh McDaniel got a job as HC in Vegas, partly on the strength of how good Mac looked as a rookie. Next year, of course, Belichick got the bright idea to hire Matt Patricia as OC and Joe Judge as QB coach, Mac hated them both and rebelled, and the slippery slope was on. Anyway, that year is pretty much the only argument for Josh McDaniels being a competent OC without Brady and the Patriots Way around him. This is the example where you ca. say McDaniels was a good offensive coordinator by relying on a power running game and putting Jones in good situations. However, I do remember reading the work of Matthew Fairburn (who transferred from BUF to NE beat) and he said Belichick was more hands on with the offense after Brady’s departure. He was the one who signed Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry in free agency to build a big and physical offense. McDaniels did call the plays but his role as architect of that offense is questionable. The year Cam played for the Pats, their offense was 27th in the league (#4 for rush yards though) With Matt Cassell, Pats had an offense that was #1 in the league the previous year with Brady and still had Moss, Welker, and a stable of capable RBs; plugged in a QB who had 4 years to watch and learn; and got capable results. The bigger question for Pats fans who want to see Drake Maye reach his potential, is what results has McDaniel had developing QB? And you can't address that question without looking at Sam Bradford - who looked promising under Pat Shurmer, promising under Brian Shottenheimer, and like he just couldn't play in between with Josh McDaniel. Mac Jones their offense was #6 for points, I do grant that. So I give you 1 year of "+" and 1 year of (- - ) on McDaniel with a young QB. For those keep questioning me about Cam Newton. You will see my next post stating that I was wrong/incorrect about Cam Newton. 2nd. You guys remember Mac Jones his first year under Josh McDaniels? A. Top 10 offense B. Mac Jones ended up being a pro bowl alternate 3. 08 pats offense was legit. You still need a QB to run your offense. I am very sure every AFC east rival thought that year Brady went down they were done. Nobody thought anything of Matt Cassell look how he ended up playing....got himself a nice contract from the chief's after playing for the pats. Edited 7 hours ago by Ghost_002! Quote
AlCowlingsTaxiService Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago McDaniel is the quintessential illustration of the “Peter Principle” in action. Thus said, he’s not a bad hire as an OC. 1 Quote

Says who? He is considered around the NFL as good coordinator. What ...because a few fans say different? He has worked with other QBs other than Brady and had a top 10 offense with those QBs (already named the QBs) I mean he had a top 10 offense with Mac Jones. That says a lot. Keep bring up Sam Bradford, I must have missed Bradford's incredible QB rating and seasons after McDaniels left. He, McDaniels has adjusted the Patriots offense multiple times to adhere to the talent the Pats had through the years. He changed the offense to go vertical w Moss, he developed an offense for include 2 TEs after Moss, and he put an offense together with a running QB in Cam Newton. He's good enough and qualified enough....head coach, no. OC yes. Edited 7 hours ago by Ghost_002! Quote

These guys aren’t great on their own (I do like Vrabel though) but they function well as a unit. I’m sure Vrabel will have a direct like to Bellichick as well. Drake Maye is going to need stability & experience on the coaching side of things. Right now, his development is more important than wins or losses. He needs to keep showing progress. I came away very impressed after that first matchup against the Bills. He looked poised, accurate, and athletic. As a fan, he’s a fun player to watch all the way back to college. As a rival, I hope he busts and Brissett is starting by week 10. The Patriots definitely look like they are on the right track though. Mayo looked absolutely overwhelmed & incompetent on the side lines. Quote
