So I never understand this.  Why does the NFL allow a third party group of sportscasters and journalists decide who is the NFL MVP and NFL All Pro(s)??  Wouldn’t the NFL want to control that list?

I feel like each teams GM and/or Head Coach should get the votes, with a rule that you can’t vote for anyone on your own team.

this reminds me of how they used to award the college football “National Champion “.   Two polls- and coaches poll and the journalists poll.  Uhh which group do you think knew more about the best football team? The football coaches or the nerds in the press box?

at least these days, it seems like more and more former players have votes.

It's not a league award.  It is literally the Associated Press's list of awards that they made up and award how they see fit.  The NFL has neither the ability, or desire to stop outside parties from discussing and driving traffic to the NFL.  There are other MVP awards given, like PFWA, PFF, yahoo, and other media orgs.

The only thing that makes the AP unique is that the NFL decided over the last decade to host the "NFL Honors" as an additional league event where 20ish awards (most or all from 3rd parties) are announced and the AP was given the honor of presenting a series of their awards.  I suppose you could consider these "sanctioned" by the NFL.  The AP (and other media) has a bunch of awards that they give outside of NFL honors (like All Pro).

I actually think the former players are the problem. I think they are more likely to vote for the guys they like and are friends with versus the "nerds" who will look at it more objectively and without as much bias. Many of the former players are terrible analysts and got their jobs because of their names, not because they are good journalists or football analysts. Some of them do minimal work and collect a paycheck. That being said, some of them are pretty good, like Orlovsky.

Head coaches and GM's would show favoritism.  The AP I guess chooses which sportswriters they think are experts who follow the league closely and objectively evaluate who deserves all pro nods and awards like MVP.  It's a way better voting session that the pro bowl which is a popularity contest (players, fans, coaches all vote).  For example, Kirby Joseph was voted first team all pro which he deserved but wasn't selected to the Pro Bowl.  I don't know if there's a better system as it's far from perfect just looking at some of the television personalities or former players who get a vote.

They used to let them pick the college football National Champion too.  AP should go back to being the Fourth Estate, and get the ***** out of the NFL!

It’s called AP MVP for a reason.

I don’t know if all the voters take it seriously. Actually do research.

Maybe they should expand the number of voters. I think it’s only 50 voters.

The nerds in the press box

Coaches are too busy....coaching. Preparing their team for next week. They don't have time to watch the entire relevant scope of college football on a weekly basis.

I like expanding it, but also why not make it transparent?
