Big Turk Posted January 13 Posted January 13 They better figure out how to pick up Baltimore's simulated pressures a lot better than they did in the first matchup or it's going to be a long day at the office for Allen trying to run for his life all game. That was tough to watch on the replay. 1 1 Quote

Utah John Posted January 13 Posted January 13 10 hours ago, nuklz2594 said: is this current oline better than our super bowl oline? Can't really compare lines from different eras because the lines are built for the needs of that time. Today's O line is certainly better than any we've had since the SB years. The first of the SB years probably had the best O line of the four because after that the Colts stole* House Ballard away, and things weren't quite the same afterwards. Probably the best Bills O line for their specific time was the Electric Company that Saban built to help OJ. Back then it was not unusual for a QB to attempt 12-15 passes per game, so pass blocking wasn't the key as it is now. The Electric Company (turned on the Juice, get it?) was huge and dominant, and OJ's great success in 1973 and 1975 was definitely helped by that line. * For those who don't remember, the Colts signed Ballard away by promising him he'd be the highest paid player on the team. The Bills couldn't match that open-ended commitment, not with Kelly, Smith, Thomas, Reed etc on the roster. The Colts refused to specify a dollar figure for the Bills to match, and the league let them get away with it. Soon after, the league woke up and banned offers like that. 1 hour ago, Big Turk said: They better figure out how to pick up Baltimore's simulated pressures a lot better than they did in the first matchup or it's going to be a long day at the office for Allen trying to run for his life all game. That was tough to watch on the replay. That's a valid concern, but Kromer has had a full season now to coach them up, and to work with Brady and Allen at setting protections. Also the Ravens have put a full season of their schemes on tape for the Bills to figure things out. Quote

Everybody was keying on that magical WR, but it starts with the OLine. And I expected these moves would deliver. It went even better! Brown has also exceeded expectations. I mean, he was good. Now he 's great. He and Dawkins are maulers. McGovern to center was also quite the move by the coaches. Morse was amazing at pulling, super fast for a big guy, but his push in run plays was below average. The constant addition of a 6th lineman is awesome, Anderson is sure doing his part, and I expect copycats (frequent use of a 6th Olineman). No salary cap for coaches, right? Pay Kromer and Brady to stay! The McGovern shift was a risk, we thought. Dallas had tried him at center and it didn't work out. For whatever reason (scheme, coaching, who knows) it's worked beautifully. Once again, we're amazed that Beane knows more than we do. I would love Kromer to stay, and I hope the Bills will do what's necessary to keep him. If Brady gets a HC opportunity, and it's not a loser's cesspool (e.g., Jets) he will take it. Any coordinator would. The Bills offense is outstanding this year so Brady's stock is high. A couple of injuries or fluke plays next year, and it might not be so rosy. AFC teams will adjust to the Bills using an extra O lineman, both with personnel and coaching, and again the offense might have to overcome more next year. Brady absolutely could not be faulted for taking the chance if he gets an offer. 1 Quote

Utah John Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Amazingly, the Bills have almost no players getting post season honors. That must stick in their craw a bit. Other than Josh, none of the skill players on offense get enough yards to get attention, and on defense, none except Taron Johnson get noticed -- and Johnson's viewed as only the third best nickel back in the AFC. I hope this situation gives the players more motivation, and doesn't discourage anyone. As for the O line, I don't understand how a unit that gave up only 14 sacks over the year, couldn't have at least one player who graded out well enough for all-pro. Dawkins gets more attention than the others, because besides being a great player he's such an extrovert and entertaining. The other guys just go about their business. How many times can we watch Brown simply stoning a rusher on his side, completely shutting him out for five or six seconds, before the sportswriters start to notice? 1 Quote

This TEAM is built not to get discouraged. Guys like Diggs got that way, they are gone. The sad thing IMO that the national media is missing out an interesting story of what the Bills have overcome this year and how the "Everybody eats" mantra is just not for the WRs. It's a team attitude. I think a lot of football fans are missing out on a cool Bills story. Unfortunately, I believe too much in today's world is centered around "individuality" and the "team" stories that I think would have been fascinating years ago, just don't register the same now. Not that it means anything to anyone but me but IMO this is the most interesting and easy to root for Buffalo Bills team I've ever seen. 1 minute ago, GASabresIUFan said: We are the ultimate no name team, except Josh. Perfect marriage of personnel resource allocation & coaching. That particular offseason/preseason of 2023 where the Bills finally gave up the idea of washed vets and non-hackers - guys like Quessenberry, Bobby Hart, Ike Boettger, Van Rotten were jettisonned and replaced with McGovern, Torrence, Anderson and Van Demark - this has directly led to where to OL is this year. 2 1 Quote

I questioned the timing of that contract, but the front office correctly saw this coming and got good value as it would had been more costly to retain him after this season for sure. He was drafted due to his athleticism being through the roof. But he always had a nasty streak to him. lower third round...basically a middle round pick, he was worth taking a chance on, I always thought, even if he wasn't a finished product. His high side was a Lane Johnson Lite, the low side...out of the league in a few years. The first two years, he really needed work, esp. with his back problems in his 2nd. I didn't have much hope for him after year 2, but that was due to his back. Not a good sign when someone that young, playing that type of position, needs back surgery that soon. He got his pass pro technique fixed, but I always thought he was pretty good as a run blocker. He could always move people. Edwards is the pleasant surprise for me. I saw him a few games with the Rams,. and wasn't impressed. That was before his injuries. Quote

bills6969 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 It really is an elite unit. When you’re able to run the ball like that and have long sustained drives it just kills the momentum of the opposing teams offense. Gonna need to do more of that on Sunday. 3 Quote
billsfan89 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 The offensive line was dam good last year and despite losing Mitch Morse the long time starter at center the unit has not just picked up where it left off but improved somehow. I would say that the Bills offensive line in 2023 was firmly a top 5-7 unit last year. This year I would say they are a top 3 unit (only possibly/arguably behind Detroit and Philly). It went from a very good unit last year to an elite one this season. They plugged McGovern into Morse's spot while Edwards filled in for McGovern and Anderson took over the jumbo duties from Edwards. They protect Josh amazingly and they plow over teams in the ground game. Also the development of the unit under Kromer has been great. After a rocky return season in 2022 Kromer has been masterful at building up the offensive line. They signed McGovern to a mid-level free agent contract and he's been a plug and play starter for day one. They drafted Torrence late in round two and he's help solidify the interior of the offensive line. They also signed Edwards as veteran depth and a jumbo package player in 2023 and wisely brought him back for 2024 as a starter on a two year deal. They made some great bench acquisitions in Van Denmark and Anderson who have solidified the depth of the team while selling off Bates for a decent return. Anderson has provided the team with an elite role player as the 6th offensive linemen while also adding IOL depth. Van Denmark has developed into a quality swing tackle as well a great depth piece. The team also appears to have found some promising rookies in SVPG a steal in the 5th round and Grable and possible late round find. I love seeing the entire turnaround of the offensive line program and doing so with not too many huge resources put into it. The biggest additions since 2023 resource wise have been a late 2nd round pick and a slightly above mid-level free agency add in McGovern. Edwards was a lower end free agent and Anderson and Van Denmark were undrafted free agents. SVPG and Grable were 5th and 6th round picks respectively. They also wisely extended Brown before he got out of their price range and all 5 starters are locked in for 2025 with Edwards wisely brought back on a two year deal in the 2024 off-season. Sustainable success and quality development. 1 Quote

There are a lot of reasons this Offense is great, but the reason Josh Allen and James Cook get to do what they do really comes down to the O-Line!! Coach Kromer may be one of the best position coaches in the league, and he really gets the most out of these guys. Dion Dawkins has always been good, but he has really taken it to another level these last two years under Kromer. O'Cyrus Torrence should have been a 1st round pick, and was a steal as a 2nd rounder....after a slow start to this season he is really turning into a future All-Pro RG....he is becoming dominant. I was skeptical of the Spencer Brown pick, but under Kromer, he has developed into an elite RT.....the Bills signed him to a contract extension just at the right time, as his contract would have been a lot more expensive this offseason! The move of McGovern to Center obviously was the right move, and had us all quickly forgetting Mitch Morse. You know you have a great O-line when a more than solid LG like David Edwards would have to be considered as "the weak link".....his play is far from that. Let's also throw in the official 6th OL Alec Anderson.......this guy plays with a mean streak......he's always mixing it up with someone, and brings a real toughness to the running game! Go Bills!!!!!! agreed they are the best O Line I have seen since the Kelly years with Wolford, Ritcher Hull, House, and Parker On 1/13/2025 at 8:18 AM, The Firebaugh Kid said: Anderson is a tone setter.
