The reason this conversation exists is because 2 years ago and then again last year, Herbert was anointed an elite QB by league insiders in a highly-regarded survey.

In both 2022 and 2023 he was ranked in Tier 1 according to Mike Sando's annual ranking system which is based on his conversations with "50 league insiders including general managers, head coaches, coordinators and more, all of whom placed every quarterback into tiers for the annual rankings."

A Tier 1 QB "can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game."

2022 was also the first year that Josh Allen appeared in Tier 1 so in 2022 and 2023, Herbert was widely viewed by league insiders as very close to Josh Allen.

2022:

1) Aaron Rodgers

2) Patrick Mahomes

3) Tom Brady

4) Josh Allen

5) Justin Herbert

6) Joe Burrow

2023:

1) Patrick Mahomes

2) Joe Burrow

3) Josh Allen

4) Aaron Rodgers

5) Justin Herbert

I believe Herbert was also the AFC's top vote getter among QBs for the 2022 Pro Bowl.

For those who can get behind The Athletic/NYT paywall:

That's why this conversation exists.

The NFL is all about right now.

Herbert was coming off 69-TDs and 9350 yards passing in 2020 and 2021.

And there was some drop in production in 2022 with 4700 yards and 25-TDs.

Who would it be today? Largely the same …

Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow and then a huge group of dudes in the Playoffs - Goff, Stafford, Hurts, Stroud, Herbert.

Then who? Daniels has turned around a moribund franchise in one year.

Baker has had two huge years.

If you want to drop Herbert out of this group of that group ok.

Teams that would rather have Herbert than their starter:

Bills - No

Miami - Yes

Jets - Yes

New England - Yes

Browns - Yes

Ravens - No

Bengals - No

Steelers - Yes

Colts - Yes

Jaguars - Yes

Titans - Yes

Texans - No

Chiefs - No

Broncos - Yes

Raiders - Yes

Eagles - No

Commanders - No

Cowboys - Yes

Giants - Yes

Packers - Yes

Lions - No

Vikings - Yes

Bears - Yes

Rams - No

Seahawks - Yes

Cardinals - Yes

49ers - Yes

Falcons - Yes

Panthers - Yes

Saints - Yes

Bucs - Yes

22/31 other teams would probably take Herbert over their starter.

If you want to argue to Bears with Caleb Williams, or the Falcons with Penix, or the Bucs with Mayfield fine, but he’s Top 10.

This is all fair and good but the OP was that he's not Top 5 and that it's disrespectful to mention him in the same breath with Josh.

The "experts" in a "highly regarded survey"?!?!

I got news for you. They were wrong then and they're wrong now.

BTW, I never questioned why this thread exists.

Denver, NE, Chicago, GB, TB would not.

Dallas and Arizona - why? I'd put Herbert in this class. They could trade for him, but how much better?

Vikings? Let's see what they do with Darnold. If they keep him, I wouldn't. McCarthy, go ahead.

Falcons? Make the trade if you want.

Just my non-expert opinion.
