Does this allow for any sort of negotiated injury settlement? (Not sure Watson has any incentive to do that though). But Watson probably cares more about the cash than the cap hit, and if there is something that allows the Browns to get out from the cap situation, he might be willing to help with that.

Normally a fully guaranteed contract would preclude an injury settlement. But these are not normal times. I actually believe that there is a small chance of a settlement between Watson, the Browns and the insurer. The necessary component is that Watson’s agent would have to be worried that the latest injury could void Watson’s guarantees. Things aren’t there (yet).

I can say with confidence that the Browns are very unhappy about Watson not informing them of the injury until his end of season exit interview. He complained of it hurting at that time and the team had their doctors look at it. They determined that he had re-torn it. While him apparently hiding it from the team is very suspicious, it doesn’t mean that they can prove he did it outside of team approved rehab.

If the Browns and insurer can get out of paying him, they’ll do it. If Watson can get his money, he’ll take it. But if all parties are worried they might lose or that it’ll take years to resolve, then a settlement could happen.

It seems like nobody actually reads the thread.  As pointed out by MDH and BarleyNY, Watson's contract is heavily insured, they will get $5M of cap relief next season for Watson's missed games this season and will get $44M in cap relief in 2026 if he misses the entire coming season.

This is the best possible news for the Browns, enough that the insurance company should look into it more carefully since I am pretty sure Watson doesn't want to play in Cleveland any more.

The insurance is expensive but the premium does not count against the cap, so the only question is why more teams don't do this, e.g., von Miller.

My understanding is that this is money the Browns save but his salary cap hit is still the same. I will accept being corrected but it still hurts.

Well i think now would be the perfect time for the Browns to cut the chord and eat the rest of his contract ! Anything around this guy turns to crap and they deserve what they have gotten if for nothing else just being that STUPID for signing a contract like his !!! That made absolutely no sense in any way .

And now they are getting what they deserved for being so foolish . Time to move on !!

All player salary/compensation recouped from insurance is deducted from the cap the following season. So the cap hit is the same during the given season, but they get the benefit the following one.

To add to my last post here : IF and this is a very big IF ! Watson was a decent person (which we know he's not) he would give the Browns a out on his contract after this up coming season seeing as they have gotten literally nothing from him since they signed that contract .

I don't know how much money he has received to this point but it's way over what he has delivered for it !!

But seeing as he is basically a scum bag he will hold them to it and ride off into the sunset with a truck load of money !

PFT reporting Watson reinjured the Achilles when he turned his ankle in Miami. Article speculates whether Browns will dig deeper into what Watson was doing to turn his ankle and whether that could void the contrac4.

Watson should do the right thing and stop taking ludicrous money from the Browns. Just settle for something reasonable. You're already rich beyond measure.

I think they're getting exactly what they deserve.  They knew all about him when they traded for him.

They deserve each other,  IMO.

Yes, but this is a re-tear several months later.  I am not a doctor but I've got to believe the 4-6 month window will be significantly longer.  That's also assuming Watson will want to work hard to get back ASAP.

Well, it's a few weeks and change less than several months later(not sure why that would matter anyway) and the doctors have estimated a 7 month re-hab from the second procedure.

Which is not "significantly longer" or anything like the 18 month timetable that @Low Positive suggests is likely.

I appreciate that info, the second part was not in the article I read and obviously is a big deal.

As a part time Browns fan lived in Buffalo 25 years Cleveland 25 more, fans are done with Haslam , they were 70 30 on keeping Baker , injured shoulder hurt his last season with Browns. Browns were scared after run Flacco had and were dead set on Watson being the man .

Watson's life is a Greek tragedy.  He was a very talented QB who seemed to be a respectful, courteous, hard-working young hero.  But his libido got the best of him and he compromised his morals & ethics.   And now his body is failing him.

This is a sad - if well deserved - fall from grace.

This is also further proof that America is emphatically not a meritocracy.  People like soldiers, sailors, police officers and firefighters often work diligently for the public good for peanuts while anti-heroes like Watson get millions.

I don't think it's a libido thing... the type of stuff he's doing (allegedly) is about control and power dynamics

No, Watson is a sexual predator…there are people serving years in prison with the same mentality…nothing tragic about this at all.

Why should he give the Browns a break? He didn’t make them offer the ludicrous contract that was FULLY guaranteed. No player who signs a contract should have to give back anything, unless they do so for their own good.  That being said, I hope he doesn’t get another penny of the money.

Is he scum?  Yep. When he’s played, has he played to the level of the contract? Not even close!  Did he do something to maybe reinjure the achilles?  I hope so and hope they can cut him and the contract without penalty…not because I want the browns to come out of this, but I don’t want him getting another penny.

This contract is solely on the browns. They are to blame for signing the guy. Funny part? How well baker has done since leaving the team!

One reason is because the Browns have held up their end of the contract to this point and he hasn't it's almost like the lemon law . I get what your saying but if you buy a brand new say refrigerator and in 6 months or before the warranty is up it quits working you would just keep it ? I would hope not .

Yes like every one else i think the Browns were completely ignorant to sign that contract and who ever did put pen to paper on it should no longer be allowed to get their pay check or have a job for that matter, but like the warranty on things you sign a agreement on that doesn't work or complete the agreement you made when you bought it i would think these teams should have some kind of recourse .

At least with guys like Sam Bradford they got a few years of decent play out of him before he went down with this guy they got exactly what they deserve for their stupidity but it just doesn't seem right that such a scum bag should walk away with the kind of money to live a cushy life for the rest of his life and have done nothing for it .

If you're his parent or friend, it's tragic.  If you're one of the victims, it's tragic.
