Watson is done as a player.

He busted his ACL, had shoulder surgery, a ruptured achilles and now a re-rupture.

If I'm the Browns I'm swallowing the medicine, eating that contract and just taking the best QB on the board at 2.

It's wild because of what a remarkable athlete he was before.  no wonder he needed a bunch of massages

The policy will reimburse the Browns up to $44.3M for the 2025 season. At this point it looks like Watson will be out the entire season so they’ll get the whole amount. The $44.3M will be credited to the 2026 cap. This isn’t good news for the Browns, it’s phenomenally great news for them.

Incidentally the policy on the 2024 season insured up to $13.9M of his contract. They get that money and cap space back for 2025.

Agree, except they can't cut Watson this year.  Way too much dead cap.  Has to be in the beginning of 2026.

I say that because they need some of that cap space when they trade away Garrett, etc.

For those thinking the Brown can cut Watson at the start of the 2025 season, his cap hit would be $173M.

They could do it.

They’ll cut him at the beginning of the 2026 season with a post 6/1 designation. The only way that doesn’t happen is if insurance reimbursement requires that they keep him on the roster/IR/pup for that season. As he will likely pass a physical before the 2026 season, that’s unlikely. But you never know.

Ultimately this benefits the Browns in a twisted way... they cant change Watson or his injury, they are stuck with the contract... the whole situation sucks and they totally brought it on themselves... but this will force their hand into taking a QB, rather than playing Watson half way thru 2025 the deluding themselves into thinking 2026 will be a bounce back year only to then realize he is cooked.  As well as continuing to trot him out there as the leader and looking like a joke.  They can cut bait take their lumps and rebuild. The only issue is that this QB draft is not exceptional...

I actually think Deion would welcome an opportunity for his kid to be the Browns' savior.

Despite incompetent ownership, football is a religion in Ohio. If Shedeur pans out, a big if, he'd be bigger than LeBron or Jim Brown.

Some additional info. This raises the possibility that Watson may have voided his guarantees. That’d get the Browns and insurance carriers off the hook. Incidentally this case they’d cut him a day into the 2025 season with a a post 6/1 designation.

Does this allow for any sort of negotiated injury settlement? (Not sure Watson has any incentive to do that though). But Watson probably cares more about the cash than the cap hit, and if there is something that allows the Browns to get out from the cap situation, he might be willing to help with that.

I don't know how much NFL contracts can be restructured, but could Watson and the Browns agree to a Bobby Bonilla type contract where he gets 5 million a year for the next thirty years?  He gets his money and the Browns get some cap relief.

From Google AI (seriously):

"While not common, it is possible to rupture your Achilles tendon during sexual activity due to a sudden, forceful movement that puts excessive strain on the tendon, especially if there are pre-existing weaknesses or risk factors present; this would typically occur with a forceful push-off motion during a particular position."

So this was the same Achilles that he ruptured ear this season?   Damn that’s rough!

Yeah.  The more I think about it the more I feel bad for Browns fans.  In fact, I was going to make an Achilles joke but I couldn’t pull it off.  So, no pun in tendon.

What are the chances that Watson feels bad for screwing over the Browns with his absurd contract and lack of availability to play? Yes probably wishful thinking that he even slightly cares.  If he had the slightest shred of accountability he would cut the Browns a deal and retire. What a disaster!

Why would he?

This is the exact reason why you negotiate for guaranteed money.

…..AND, the exact reason you don’t give it to him. Browns fans can thank Haslam.

Deion's already stated he doesn't want him go to a cold weather city.

During his season-ending exit interview earlier this week, Watson complained of discomfort after rolling his ankle while in Miami.

While in Miami? Are they talking about during a Fins game?  If so, how did they miss a ruptured achilles when examining his foot the first surgery a few months ago???

Was he just in Miami on recreation?  Why include this confusing/irrelevant detail.  Modern day writers are so good!!

WHAT DOES THIS MEANNNNNNN? LOL

Under the current CBA the maximum time is 5 years.

That of course demands that the player is still on the books during that time.
