Chris Spielman to interview for Jet's GM position

Yes, that Chris Spielman. Former LB for the Buffalo Bills (96-97). Currently the CEO and special assistant to the owner in Detroit. He is seen as a big reason for the resurgence in Detroit.

 

Has had a very good career. 

 

His playing years with the Lions (88-95): 

First-team All-Pro (1991)

2× Second-team All-Pro (1992, 1994)

4× Pro Bowl (1989–1991, 1994)

NFL solo tackles co-leader (1994)

PFWA All-Rookie Team (1988)

 

Inducted into Pride of the Lions (Lions Hall of Fame). 

 

His Brother Rick is part of the team looking to select the next GM for the Jets.

I was a huge fan as a player.  Didn't he have a nasty series of concussions towards the end?  Or maybe a neck injury?  A severe concussion would explain the desire to work in the Jets org anyways

There may have been a neck injury. I know he lost his wife to breast cancer at the age of 42. I think that was around 2009. He was an analyst for ESPN at the time. Always had lots of respect for Chris. Currently the only Bills jersey I own. Might want to take on the challenge in NJ but seems to have it good in Detroit.

Me too, he had a neck problem. I loved the way he played.

I thought it was wife’s breast cancer that was the end for him..  if memory serves, he chose his marriage over his career.  I was proud of his choice, but I’m sure the concussions and other matter also contributed to it.

 

The bottom line is is he’s been in some way in the front office for awhile, so if deserved, good for him.  I’m a fan as well at least as a player.

My favorite Speilman story when he was with the Bills is he said when he was at home or anywhere he would always go up and down stairs sideways to work on his lateral movement.  Can you imagine?

He did return for Cleveland briefly after the Bills traded him there for "past considerations" (literally nothing)

Yea if he wanted to be a GM why not hire himself in Detroit? I think he could do a good job as a leader, direction setter and cohesion builder but not sure he is a talent evaluator.
