If a team decided they wanted to hire Deion Sanders based on his record in college and time as a player they couldn't just do it without breaking the Rooney Rule.

All of the open teams have already satisfied it.

Gotcha

I was just pointing out how just hiring Deion without a true search would also be a "sham" and violation because you need to interview 2 minority candidates now even though the goal is more minority coaches getting hired

I would say it differently: the goal is to have more minority candidates participating in the interview process.  That ultimately will lead to more minorities being hired (that’s the hope at least) but the first step is greater access to opportunities and expansion of networks etc.

For sure, and that makes sense.

In hindsight we don't remember Drew Brees being damaged goods but that's what he was when the Saints acquired him.   On the surface that was a sh!t job.   His success there was surprising.

Not to Saban. ;)

Daboll isn't a front-of-the-house guy.   Just doesn't get along with process oriented football coach types.  Saban clearly hated him.   Either that or he was asking where his mother was from 10 times a game on the sideline.   The story about Saban not even knowing Daboll had taken the Bills OC job was classic.

Actually he was.  He was highly thought of in ny and then fassel scapegoated him.  Then fassel bombed without him in 03 and was fired.

He was a top candidate heading into the 05 season because of his closeness with Parcells.

not sure why you think the saints job was bad.  They had a stable front office and a very talented roster.  What they needed was a young qb and someone to build an offense for him.  Payton wanted Romo and offered a second to Dallas and Parcells said no before the 06 season.  They ended up with Bree’s.  What no one knew was how much like Parcells Payton was.  Fassel portrayed him as a dunce that was holding him back and the reality was the opposite.  Fassel was the product of two excellent coordinators.

the saints 05 season was derailed by hurricane katrina but they had a talented group.  Payton ran one of the toughest camps in the league before they changed the rules and the players loved him for it.

New Orleans was absolutely not a bad job.  That was a pretty talented roster.  Good defensive group, outstanding rb group and a good offensive line plus a good kicker.

Fassel never got another NFL job after that. The blackballing because of his clear and unfair scapegoating of Payton was real. He became a pariah due to that.

He did get an OC job for Billick didn't he? I think he might have been Billick's last throw of the dice at OC in Baltimore?

My bad; you are correct. He did try and stay in the game after the Ravens’ stint, though, and couldn’t get a sniff.

“Fassel joined the Ravens as an offensive consultant in 2004 to help with development of Kyle Boller. He became the Ravens offensive coordinator in 2005. Critics of Fassel pointed to his lack of success as offensive coordinator after two seasons with the Ravens, in 2005 and part of 2006. During that time, the Ravens ranked near the bottom of the league in offense. On October 17, 2006, Fassel was fired by the Ravens.”

I know because before Hard Knocks and All or Nothing there was that brilliant book from an author embedded within the 2004 Ravens that chronicled the season from the inside. I remember Matt Cavanaugh gets fired at the end of the book, almost against Billick's better judgment due to pressure from the owners and the fans, and they promote Fassel and then the final chapter basically summarises the 2005 season very quickly by saying "Boller got worse they brought in McNair and Fassel was no good". Cavanaugh went on to work for Rex in New York I think and then for Jay Gruden in Washington. There is a guy who disappeared.... Jay Gruden. Did he get another job after being fired as Washington Head coach?

Jacksonville Jaguars

On January 22, 2020, Gruden was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as their offensive coordinator under head coach Doug Marrone.[38] Alongside Doug Marrone and the rest of the team's coaches, he was let go following the season after the team finished with a franchise-worst 1–15 record.[39]

Los Angeles Rams

Gruden worked as an offensive consultant with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.[40]
