Not sure what happened to him. Bucs fans say he was awesome year one and then had some bad games in there, and got married somewhere in there. They seem to speculate it could be an off-the-field thing. Again, I have zero proof of anything and it is fully speculation, but Bucs fans seem to think he had some issue.

 

There is big upside here if he can figure it out. He is very athletic, huge leg apparently, very inconsistent. A lot of punters/kickers find a home at their second or third stop. It is worth a flyer. He also kicks off. Martin has been pretty good, and cutting him adds minimal savings, but competition breeds success. 

 

Bucs fans all talk about this play saving their season a couple of years ago:

Always good to bring in competition and to possibly improve and save money.

 

It seems like Sam Martin has had an excellent season, much better, more consistent than last year.  I cannot think of almost any games this year when he has not come through with good kicks, including being very good at pinning teams deep on their side of the field.  Also seems to fit in well with this team. Loved how Martin supported Bass in his hard times and then acting like a supportive dad when he started to turn it around.

 

How does Martin rank in punter stats and ratings? Punts inside the 20? or other important stats?

Yeah I get it but still.  The counter that is for a punter to go to San Diego State and get as much hype as he did, must have been pretty good.  Didn't seem to hear as much about this other guy.

Martin was better in 2022.  But he's getting old and that's why this move was made. 

 

In any case, the punter doesn't really matter much, right?
