it already feels like the last few weeks of the season are meaningless

I'm excited to see a slate of NFL games that actually matter, everyone plays their best players and the coaches make a game plan and everything

The only problem with 6 NFL playoff teams is that the 3rd wild card is almost always a significantly better team than the fourth division winner.  They would have to go back to three divisions to make it all make sense, or award playoffs to only the top 3 division winners.

Yes, but if they adjust to division winners are only guaranteed a playoff spot and not a certain seeding, then that 4th division winner could end up being the 6th seed.  But this is also why I would like to see them get rid of the divisions.  In such a small season, even with 18 games, I see no reason to play a team twice.

I won't begin to try to engineer the mechanics of it, but no more tanking.  A bottom tier tournament for teams to sort out draft order; better performance in the losers' playoffs results in a higher (better) draft pick.

And I imagine there'll be a whole lot of finagling by teams in the hunt for either the winners or losers playoffs.

I think they'll keep the current format until TV ratings fall.  If you get to eight teams the importance of the regular season diminishes.  I think seven is the sweet spot for playoff teams.
