Maybe for the same reason total yards are used instead of yards per carry for running backs. The former, and similar total stats, were used for years as benchmarks.  It is only in the last 10-20 years that new statistical measures have been created and the league hasn’t adopted their use as much as the fans have. The league still emphasizes the “old” stats as those are the basis for records.

But reading various sources, I’m seeing more and more emphasis put on EPA stats and the like. The points per drive is a useful measure but it’s hard to separate teams when the numbers and differences are so small.

I noticed the chiefs never finished across the board top ten in offensive and defensive points and yards at any time during their current run. Which tells me they have been keying in on other metrics earlier than the rest.

Why total yards or total points are used as main defensive metric.
I think points per drive makes more sense.

Surrender 30 points facing 8 drives is different than surrender them facing 12 drives.

agreed, time of possession is a factor in so much as long sustained drives limit your offensive opportunity.

Like my grandpappy used to say “If you need numbers to tell you who’s good and who’s bad, you ain’t paying attention. I don’t need to know a gal’s measurements to know whether I’d marry her”
