There should be something written in the contract that says if they don't complete the contract they don't get paid, he just got his extension and how can he hint at wanting to leave this short after signing that and still expect to get his money ?

I'm thinking wr will be treated like rb's. Drafted every year cut when the rookie contract is up.

Speed and quickness have a shelf life.  Receivers get banged up with hits where they can't protect themselves.

Average age of the 10 wide receivers with the most receiving yards is 24 - 5 are still on their rookie contracts.

And yet, here we are with A Cooper on a reasonable deal - unable to hold the Bills hostage.  The point is, the Bills do have some control over the contracts of the players they get.

Unfortunately the Bills need a top tier WR for next year.  It's hard to get a non-diva top tier WR, so the Bills need to be careful.  The D Adams/ T Hill/ S Diggs of the world need to be avoided.  Maybe A Cooper if he shows a little more, or a big move for DK Metcalf.

The D in DK stands for Diva, Hell to the no.

Based on what? The data suggests that WR contracts and % of cap are higher now than at any point in history. The data says the exact opposite of what you posted. That is all true even before Chase signs his new deal that will certainly be historic.

QB's are going to become RB's too because they get paid more and more lol.

Because of the incredible amount of talent coming out at wr now in the draft deep into the middle RDS, it's just not wise to pay the position insane money

Poll - with diggs and hill most notably recently deciding to want to leave mid extension, do we see teams now looking to sign short contracts and protect themselves more?

The problem with the diggs situation was that the Bills signed him to a huge contract extension when he had two full seasons left. article on details. It guaranteed him an additional $70M. Teams can’t do that for a player that already forced his way out of one team. This isn’t new information for NFL execs.

Similarly Miami tried to make another problem child happy by handing him more money and guarantees. Thus their current problems with Hill.

You know, I wonder if there are not folks in the NFL looking at this to be a bit more critical at handing out big QB bucks on hope tbh ... one really bad QB contract can set you back 5 years (Rodgers, Watson lets see what happens with Lawrence... ) anyway, yes it is by far the most critical position, but man they can eat up a lot of salary cap...  and if you arent getting the production and they arent your future, you are cooked handing out longer term contracts for big bucks...

the biggest issue w big money WRs is there is only one football.

multiple sick weapons is always the path to big offensive numbers and chips lead primarily by the offensive side of the football.  obv qb matters the most, and upgrading the OL always helps (there are 5 of them so you really can't have too many, they play every snap and don't need the ball, so they add value on every play).

don't get me wrong, if it fit cap wise i'd consider having hill on our team, we don't have outside speed and he might be the fastest.  it would create insane issues for defenses.   but if it's pay him 25 or pay like garrett or crosby or whever 25, i'm going w the d end.  a defensive player can always contribute making plays and keeping the defense sound.  a wr can be a decoy or a blocker, but really the impact of a top guy is when they have the ball in their hands.  I also think an impact (not necessarily elite) wr is more common than an elite pass rusher, and that it's much easier to manufacture elite looking results in a given game for a wr than a pass rusher (gabe davis had 4 tubs in one game).

perhaps for WR.  Reminds me of that hilarious commercial for I forget what brand where the diva WR is drafted, celebrates, and falls down the stairs.

Thanks for reminding me of the Leon campaign, it's as predictive as a Simpsons episode.

Yes, that's exactly how it works.

Players dont have much power to "leave" beyond retiring. If he does that, teams can and will claw back prorated amounts of any signing bonus. Vontae Davis cut Beane a check a week after leaving at halftime. Paid back his bonus without much asking from the team. Handled it like a pro.

They also obviously do not get any of the salary portion after they leave.

Shakir is the only current wr id extend. It won't cost a ton and he's extremely unselfish and mature.

How much do you think it’ll cost?

It is indeed interesting that WR has become such an important high paying position when you look at the relative success of the best WRs in the game.

Justin Jefferson, Jamarr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, TO, Larry Fitzgerald don't have a super bowl.

Looking at recent Super Bowl winners though does show the importance of having at least a very good/great receiving weapon.

Chiefs last 2 years had traded away Hill and won back to back with MVS and JuJu.  They did have Kelce though.

Rams had Kupp on an absolute heater that year, Bucs had Evans, Godwin, and AB, Chiefs had Hill and Kelce, Patriots had Gronk and Edelman.

You could maybe argue the Eagles but Alshon Jeffrey and Zach Ertz weren't nobodies.

So it can be argued that you don't need a record breaking, best in the league receiver but I also think looking at recent history shows you need good/great weapons.
