I think that the WR contract market is heading in the same direction as RB's long-term

Perhaps not quite as extreme, but there's just not the incremental value that comes in locking up players at that position in super crazy second contracts when you have the quality and quantity of players coming in each draft class.  Especially with how offensive schemes are being designed these days and the WR-RB roles becoming more interchangeable.

Maybe I just love the direction that the Bills have seemingly gone in with prioritizing OL quality and depth in favor of paying at the WR position.  It's certainly worked this year and is more sustainable long-term.

And also...

Really interesting how some of these guys have no loyalty whatsoever to organizations who give them insane money and do everything in their power to make them successful on the field.

Miami gave Hill $105 MM guaranteed, and he feels no shame at all about causing problems during an off year.

If character meant you had Olympic speed, Nate Peterman would have been the fastest man on the planet.

Who is Stephen Diggs?

If I'm mid-paragraph of my innocuous post on page 53 of a discussion...I'm still going pause to look up the proper spelling of Edefuan Ulofoshio before clicking, "Submit Reply." In a way, I envy the level of IDGAF needed to open a new discussion with the misspelling of a well-known former Bill's name in the title.

The real answer to these outsized pubescent childrens antics is to put them on the bench, or IR them for a month, you can bet your azs if every team employed such tactics their whiny sh-t would stop real quick, The IR designation would be that they are psychologically unable to contribute,

… just a thought…

GO BILLS!!!

You know they have to agree to it, right? That’s why they have agents and stuff. You have to compete in the market, not in a vacuum.

And yet, here we are with A Cooper on a reasonable deal - unable to hold the Bills hostage.  The point is, the Bills do have some control over the contracts of the players they get.

Unfortunately the Bills need a top tier WR for next year.  It's hard to get a non-diva top tier WR, so the Bills need to be careful.  The D Adams/ T Hill/ S Diggs of the world need to be avoided.  Maybe A Cooper if he shows a little more, or a big move for DK Metcalf.

The financial end of the Cooper’s old deal was a fairly unique situation and why we gave up a 3rd rounder. I’m glad there was something they could do, like getting Douglas last year when we ran out of DBs. It doesn’t mean we can dictate the market on new deals.

But yes, I fully agree we are going to need to do something at WR again next offseason. For now I’ll just enjoy the ride and hope it’s a long one!

what's that got to do with the OP's topic?

Players get injured.  Not something for factoring  into contract length--unless the player has a significant history and is near end of career..

Well, actually I thought I was trying to agree with you... that Diggs situation is that he is on IR and not likely to be in a situation where he gets a long term contract next year because he is unlikely to make an impact next year...  like OBJ getting 1 or maybe 2 year deals... so I actually think the situation the poster stated will apply to him getting a shorter term deal... but not for the reasons premise (the DIVA status, getting thru a contract and drafting new, diminishing the WR role etc... ) but because he is 30 something coming off a mid year ACL and I dont see him getting a long term contract with that kind of risk .

Now if that is not what you were saying when you were saying Diggs situation is he is on IR then I misinterpreted your meaning... but never the less I think he gets a short term contact next year because of the injury not the fact he is a DIVA. That being said... I do think his stints with the Bills and the Vikings could scare some teams away even if they considered a 1 or 2 year deal.

Loyalty counts both ways, and teams owe players little. Every player needs to look out for their own interests. But ideally you have a situation where some goodwill exists between parties.

First, I believe Diggs never played one down for his extension but he got a big bonus for it.   We can thank Hill's contract in Miami for most of that 31M Dead cap hit this year.

Second, I know I am in the minority here but elite WR's are over valued IMO.   What AFC teams have the best WR's?  Houston, Jets, Dolphins Bengals...three of those teams are not in the playoffs and the one that is had a ton of injuries to WR's, Houston lost Dell, Diggs and Collins (for some of the season).   The Chiefs traded one of the most unique talents at WR and then won the next two SB's with trash at WR.   After QB, I really don't think elite WR is next in the importance list...it is probably coaching and scheme and players who can do what is asked at a competent level.

Throw him on the scrap heap with the rest of the losers:  OJ, OBJ, AB, Ochocinco, TO, Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson, DeShaun Jackson, Plaxico Burress, Le'Veon Bell etc.  All playing from the book "How to Be and Idiot and End Up Broke".

Tyreek is great but not worth the headache plus he is 31 in March.

Too bad he isn't more like Tremaine Edmunds in that department.

There will always be stupid teams who sign WRs to crazy deals. A few years ago, nobody would've believed a team would ever give a QB a fully guaranteed contract, and here we are...

Well that may be a one off after the disaster that became lol...

perhaps for WR.  Reminds me of that hilarious commercial for I forget what brand where the diva WR is drafted, celebrates, and falls down the stairs.

This isn't the ad you were thinking but it's what came to mind.

Can't wait for Malik Nabors' second contract negotiation after this legendary draft interview

I'm gonna add Pittsburgh to the teams with really good WRs list that made the playoffs.  KCs WRs aren't anything to sneeze at either IMHO.

They are not in a tier with those other teams.  No way.
