looks like a great piece! Wish I didn’t have to subscribe to read the whole thing!!

I understand that writers, and newspapers have to eat. Without compensation, they cease to exist.

But I also understand that people don't want to subscribe to read an occasional article. I wonder if it would make sense to charge a small one time fee per article rather than asking for a full subscription. I don't want to subscribe either, but I'd pay a dollar to read an interesting article.

I have wondered if the article Dunne published last year after the Eagles game made any sort of change in the way Sean does his job.  Some of those incidents described within it made Sean look like a jerk and I doubt Sean wants to present himself that way.  But, imo, those obsessed with winning and that are stressed about every little detail that could get them beat, truly do look like jerks to the normal world.  He might have seen the reflection in the mirror and decided to change some of the things he saw.

McDermott surely didn't think Dunne would try to portray him as he did. It was typical bully journalism.

Yeah, I'm all for providers/creators getting paid (I pay for a subscription to the Athletic) but would much rather pay $1 for this article than $8 for an entire month.

Its gotten to the point with McDermott that I want them to win as much for him as I do for the fans and city.   He deserves some of the criticism he's taken but some of it is way way over the top.

I’m definitely hard on the guy and I think for the most part for valid reasons.  But as a person ,coach McDermott is as quality a human as you can get.  Players seem to love him and he seems to love the team and the city.

I would love nothing more than to see him finally get over the hump.  With that said if his defense lets down Josh again in the playoffs, I’m going to have a tough time not wanting a change.  We only have so many shots at this thing with a prime Josh Allen.

Dunne is a tool.

Yeah EFF reading this, eff platforming him, and EFF him trying to play it cool like he was just reporting what he knew about his team.  That was the filthiest hit piece in Buffalo sports history... and he knew it.  Remember his twitter posts the day it dropped, he was reveling in his revenge for whatever perceived sleight he imagined up... this wasnt some McAfee versus '24 Colts, pushing his team to grow some balls.

Don't fall for this and most importantly dont give this F'ing dork any $$

The article last year wasn't exclusively negative. People criticizing it either haven't read it or are of the pompom-wearing contingent of this fanbase. And in many cases, both.

I appreciate Dunne's work because he actually puts some effort into his content. He isn't just a fan with press credentials who is more worried about job security than honest reporting.

Hard to focus on any positive when he used a bad analogy in the locker room, and tried twisting this into COACH IS AN IDIOT TERRORIST.  Anybody whos job is to speak for a living can tell you, sometimes you accidentally say some dumb s*** that by accident.

If I was Beane and McDermott I would stop giving Dunne access. But he seems to still have ties to players and the org, so I guess they are trying to control the narrative rather than letting him spew whatever deranged words will generate headlines.

The last thing most of these platforms want is a 1-time transaction. They want your credit card on file, being charged every month.

Depending on the source, 25-30% of people who take advantage of the free or $1 streaming months never cancel. Some might just be hooked and love the service, but most probably either forget or figure maybe they'll watch it someday so they don't cancel.

Meanwhile... $4, $4, $4, $4, (price hike) $6, $6, $6, $6 (price hike) $9.99, $9.99, $ 9.99, $9.99

Hey, do we still have that Snow Owl streaming service? We DO! Awesome! There's that NFL game on!

I admit it, I'm one of them. I did the $1 Peacock trial just to watch Dolphins/Chiefs, then cancelled a few weeks later (it was easy to do).

This year rolls around and I want to watch Packers/Eagles, so I reactivate (also very easy to do). After that, I was like "it's fall... maybe there will be something on there... there's going to be a playoff game in a few months anyway (at least I thought)...."

I thought they hated each other

Side note, remember when Ty dunne and Isaiah McKenzie would go to that one restaurant every week and take live questions from fans

I don't think that's McDermott - he doesn't have time to lug around hate for a journalist.

He and Beane (separately) actually sat down with Dunne at one of the off-season events last year - Senior Bowl or Combine - and had what Dunne described as a "good conversation".

I think part of that conversation may have been McDermott and Beane saying "look, as a journalist, why wouldn't you reach out and get our side of it?" to which Dunne could say "as an independent journalist, the Bills have not credentialed me or given me access to you".  I think one outcome was, Dunne agreed to reach out and get McDermott or Beane's side of anything he wrote about them (not agree with their side, just seek it out).  And Beane/McDermott ensured Dunne got some form of press credentials to the Bills, which Dunne doesn't always use but has tweeted about a couple times just enough to make the point he's able to be there.

And yeah, I'd like to read it 'cuz Ty Dunne writes well but nah, I'm not gonna subscribe to do so.

Dunne didn't have press credentials to the Bills at the point where he wrote that hit piece last year.  He gained access last spring after he spoke with Beane and with McDermott, I forget if it was at the Senior Bowl or at the Combine - the latter I think.

So from what we know about McDermott, he is sincerely committed to Kaizen, the business principle of involving the whole organization in striving for continuous improvement.  So I would imagine he looked at that piece, looked at places where it pointed to areas he could improve, and decided on how to address them.

As for last year's article, I think it was notable that a lot of the Buffalo press corps did not speak out on it one way or the other.  The most cogent comment on it came from John Wawrow, aka @Delete This Account, a guy with considerable experience and considerable access/trust within the Bills organization.  His summary of the article was "former employee has issues with former boss" and something to the effect of "that's why many of us will sit this one out".

I agree that NFL head coaches are a special, driven breed and that can make them come across as jerks from time to time.  People who are laser-focused on one goal, also, can fail to perceive how they come across viewed from a broader perspective.  But also, when you interview 40 people and interview them at length, you can both ask for, and elicit, stories that can portray a person in a particular slanted way.

all the credit in the world to mcdermott for not only granting this interview, but for speaking 4x the agreed upon length. ty dunne said he was given 15 minutes, but then mcdermott kept going and going. the interview lasted for over an hour.

the interview was in mcdermott's office.

it was held last week.

as in, less than two weeks before the playoffs - and during a time when the bills were reasonably in playoff prep mode since the NE game was a throwaway.

i don't think i've ever heard of such a thing in all my decades of following/watching the nfl. what head coach is granting a private interview with a reporter and speaking to them for an hour plus less than two weeks before the playoffs? the full Q&A reads like part self testimonial, part therapy.

mcdermott comes off as likeable and definitely someone worth rooting for. he badly wants to win a super bowl in buffalo. but this just reeks of insecurity to me. he has a clear desire to win people over, particularly his critics, likely even ty dunne himself. and that just kinda blows my mind. i just can't see someone like andy reid giving this interview. imagine andy being introspective out loud to his biggest critic in a sit-down interview two weeks before the divisional round. it wouldn't happen.

now, to be clear. there's 168 hours in a week. one hour with ty dunne isn't going to hurt anything in the bigger picture.

but again, the fact that mcdermott felt this was a necessary use of time is pretty surprising and a bit revealing.

The fact McD would sit down with a person who effectively tried to do a character assassination piece on him a year or two ago speaks volumes to who he is, IMO.

More than anything, I think it shows that McD, much like many of these players want to win for us and this city so badly that it honestly might be putting too much pressure on themselves because they may care too much...I know it sounds weird, but that is a real thing.

This coach didn’t grow up in Buffalo but knows he’s become a Buffalonian to his core.

He takes it one step further. McDermott, a devout Christian, believes he was placed in this position as the team’s head coach for a “greater purpose.”

Imagining what a championship could do — for everyone — he pauses. He gets emotional.

“I bleed for that. I bleed for that win,” says McDermott, pointing to his chest. “And that’s real. What I want for people, for these fans, is for the true light to be shown on what this place really is.”

Being overly calm and kind to those who try and tear you down is literally the best victory dance you can have-Not a big McDermott post season believer but that dude is all class-

Well said. It’s like he now understands what it’s like to be a Bills fan. He is one of us.
