Sweats Posted Monday at 05:28 PM Posted Monday at 05:28 PM So, i've got a cold and i'm trying to shake it off and work through it, however, my wifes birthday is coming up in a few days and i'm planning on going away with her for about 4 days (everything is planned and booked, so there's no turning back now for refunds). If it were up to me, i'd just stay in bed for the next 2 weeks, but that's not an option. I need your "home" cold remedies to at least get me over the hump. What have you got........ Quote
Just Jack Posted Monday at 07:55 PM Posted Monday at 07:55 PM Last time I had a cold I bought the bulk pack of Dayquil/Nyquil and just kept taking it per instructions. Did not seem to clear it up any faster, but I could function. Talking to someone later, they think I had the flu, but I did have the flu shot earlier in the season, so their thinking is the symptoms were not as severe. My personal thought? I might have had Covid, again, since it started the same way, a sore throat. But the home test came up negative, like they had before. I only got a positive test from the drive thru pharmacy test. If you think it's the C word, get Paxlovid, and quickly. Within 2 days you'll feel fine again. But make sure you finish the routine. 1 Quote
DrDawkinstein Posted Monday at 08:07 PM Posted Monday at 08:07 PM Can try Vitamin C, Zinc, and Elderberry supplements to try to fight it faster. Agreed with Jack on medicating just to get through the symptoms. 1 Quote
Jauronimo Posted Monday at 08:18 PM Posted Monday at 08:18 PM I eat a lot of pho as soon as I feel myself getting sick. Keep the fluids going, like lots of hot tea. I'm usually good within 48 hours of feeling cold symptoms. If that doesn't work, Scotch. That will either make things better or much, much worse. Quote
Ridgewaycynic2013 Posted Monday at 08:26 PM Posted Monday at 08:26 PM https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Thomas'_Eclectric_Oil This was a patent medicine that 'Bride the First's' family swore by, hasn't been available in years. My father in law maintained that at the first sign of a cold, take a teaspoon, and the cold will be greatly eased, if not cured. I tried it once, and by gum, he was right. Stuffy nose, coughing, phlegm all gone...along with my gastrointestinal tract for the next week. I did not think that the human body could expel matter in that manner. 😳 Truly a case of the cure being worse than the disease. However, it had a large amount of camphor oil in the mixture, and was a wonderful linament to put on bruises. Took the soreness right away. Quote

Simon Posted Monday at 09:35 PM Posted Monday at 09:35 PM A cold? You could try brewing up a big cup of Quit Being a *****. 9 1 1 Quote
Steve O Posted Monday at 10:29 PM Posted Monday at 10:29 PM Add quercetin to the zinc, hammer and nail analogy. Zinc is the nail, it does a way better job of getting in to your cells if you take quercetin with it. Other than that what grandma told you, vitamin C and chicken soup. Get well soon. 1 Quote
Dr Krentist Posted Monday at 10:29 PM Posted Monday at 10:29 PM I always eat chicken soup and oranges. Quote
Augie Posted Monday at 10:29 PM Posted Monday at 10:29 PM When she was a kid my wife’s uptight and teetotaling mother would sneak her a shot of whiskey. My wife never mentioned when her father would do the same. Quote
Wacka Posted Monday at 10:53 PM Posted Monday at 10:53 PM I took Thera Flu. Didn't get any better sooner but it knocks you out at night so you can sleep. Quote
Draconator Posted Monday at 11:03 PM Posted Monday at 11:03 PM Flonase. Take it twice a day. Ignore the directions that say once in 24 hours. If you find yourself stuffed up and need some nasal spray in between Flonase doses, Arm and Hammer Saline Spray. You can use that as much as you like, and you're immediately unclogged. As for aches and pains with a cold, alternate Ibuprofen and Tylenol. Quote

You do not necessarily have to alternate between those two; just try what works better for you. For me, ibuprofen is much more effective. And if you just use it on an emergency basis, you might consider going beyond the recommended OTC dose if necessary for a day or two. Unfortunately, many of the other remedies suggested so far are not backed up by independent scientific studies. Most rely on a placebo effect. Sometimes the placebo effect can be indirect. As an example, my wife is a big fan of Echinacea as cold remedy; it is expensive but scientifically utterly useless. I will take it to make her happy, and her happiness will aid my recovery. For me personally, when I feel really bad, I would make (or ask for) chicken noodle soup. It is clearly not directly fighting viruses or bacteria, but I just enjoy it and feel much better afterwards. Sweats Posted 13 hours ago Author Posted 13 hours ago I just had Covid about a month ago and that feels way different than my actual cold that i have today.........i know i have a cold, but my problem is that i am trying to feel better for the trip that i have planned with my wife in a couple of days. Ordinarily, i really don't care about being sick........you deal with it and move on; however, the timing of this one is just plain ******. I don't want to ruin her birthday by being sick and being a little *****.........you dig? Quote
