By losing the Bills stole the #1 from the Patriots which could have been traded by New England for valuable prizes on draft day even if the Patriots don't need a QB.

It appears the press in New England is in a tizzy this morning... dumb dumb dumb Patriots.

"The Patriots won a meaningless game but sacrificed a better team for next year.."

You hear players and coaches say it all the time that they play to win the game. I don't think the Pats players care about the #1 pick. They wanted to win a game as they are competitors. The Bills tried to win as well with their backups and scrubs.

I generally agree with this but Buf punting on the 35? Makes you think

Exactly!  Likely a dozen current players won't even be on next years team and half will be gone in less than 3 years by the time this coming draft class could make a significant difference.  Same with the coaches many of them will be gone, so they are all playing to win.  Roster limitations make it tough to tank one game.

There's a lot of tanking in NBA, but they teams start the process with around 20 games left in season.  Even there the players are still giving their all. (well maybe not Jimmy Butler)

Buffalo was definitely not trying to win.

This is a HUGE gaff in Pats land in my opinion.  Literally they must be a laughing stock behind the scenes for most other franchises.  What a complete ***** show they are.  You have the FIRST pick, and all you need to do is to lose.  How hard is that assignment?

Mayo figured he was coaching for his job but got the situation backwards.

I doubt they would surprise fire him 30 minutes after the game. He probably knew before hand, and didn't care about draft position.

I think we were half heartedly trying to win but also making decisions based on individual incentives/bonuses that often happened to be sort of anti-winning (e.g., punt instead of FG).  The implicit message to the 2nd/3rd stringers was probably to play smart and safe and not go all out or anything like that.

Ownership may have wanted the #1 pick, but not sure how you can make that happen unless you give your Coaching staff an absolute guarantee of their return, which they obviously didnt have.

Coaches and Players are going to try to win no matter what.

Kraft shouldve fired Mayo last week if that is what he wanted.

Once it got to 17-16 then 20-16, it felt like the Bills were pulling some gamesmanship and really not trying to win.  And I guarantee Beane and McD talked about it a bit during the week.  There is no valid reason to help out your division-mate by winning an exhibition game so they have a treasure chest of draft options.

On the flip side, once Buffalo went up 16-14, the Patriots absolutely should have thrown in the towel and just run dive plays.  That was dumb not to.

New England's loss of prime draft positioning will more than adequately be compensated by a healthy selection of conditional draft picks, advanced electronic monitoring devices, and a reestablished 'understanding' with officials.

🤔

'The Patriots will rise again!'
