Lead the Bills with 9 combined tackles but stats are far from the story of course.

Thoughts?

Did anyone see any noteworthy plays?

Any noteworthy gaffes?

I saw neither, but I thought he looked solid.

Eye test: He looked something like what Jack Campbell looked like today for the Lions. Which for a value proposition, is pretty good, UDFA vs 1st rounder.

He won't probably provide the splash plays we saw from Milano, but he definitely is being groomed to replace Matt in a year or two.  If we ever slide to a more traditional 4-3, I could easily see Bernard, Andreesen and Williams being the starters.

He’s a fascinating study. Nothing great -as befits a local boy going to a local college. But he has the smarts and intuitive nature for the position. If he develops into a true NFL starting LB, McDermott should be canonized. He’s aided by the way the game is played today with slight, fast LBs. He’d have never made it back in the day with Butkus, Lambert, Nitschke etc..

There's a lot of local boys who end up at local schools like UB or Syracuse or Pittsburgh or Rutgers or Boston college and and they all have crazy talent at 18

Every single FBS scholarship player has a chance to make it to the next level it's what they do over the next four or five years

Joe wouldn't be thought of as that big of an underdog if he was at Syracuse.. he's a good football player who could develop into a role player possibly more

And Shaun dolac is also from West Seneca and goes to UB and was just the first team All-American

@Beck Water

Even going from FCS Bryant to a small FBS school like Buffalo his local college

His success there and his journey to the league in and of itself is a beautiful story

My father always said it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog

And the kid obviously is physically and more importantly mentally strong

He's going to have a beautiful career coaching after his playing days maybe at UB

I didn't really notice him in coverage, which can be a good thing. And he was around the ball a lot. Still needs some experience, but looked decisive at the snap. I think he could develop into key depth/spot start duties or need be. Solid football player.

Small LBs were either strong safeties or FBs back in the day.

John Lynch would probably be a WLB today.

I think he did ok.  I didn’t noticed any big plays but also didn’t notice any huge mistakes.

I thought he was ghosty at times, but this was more due to a few factors. Overall he played sound. Tackled sound and took solid angles. They did not seem to blitz much and not a ton of splash plays. He did not pop to me in run D but nothing negative either. They played a lot of base and tried to keep everything in front of them. I don't feel they ran any spies, so Milton burned us. Joe was not at fault here, as safety play and CBs played " sleepy" .

Jack did not pop on film year 1 at all. He was mediocre. Joe is tracking. With his ethic, he could be a pro bowl type player some day. Just needs to keep grinding and working hard.

So I’m not saying he can’t/won’t be a pro bowler,  but do you actually think this or do you just really really really hope this could happen? If he had been a 2nd/3rd round pick from Kansas instead of the undrafted local boy would you still think the same thing based off what you have seen?

Did ok.  Better than Spector.  Needs to tackle a bit better (noticed him getting dragged for a couple of first downs) and missed a couple of zone drops leading to completions.  Again, better than Spector.  He can play.

I disagree with you that he was getting dragged.   He had a lot of open field tackles where I have seen Milano and Bernard let the guy fly right by them.  He would at least get some type of body on the guy stopping him.

Checked out the Bahama Bowl to see how Dolac would do... he was pedestrian, although he had this huge The Fugitive appliance on one arm so I dunno how banged up he was. #41 Red Murdock on the Bulls had several splash plays and actually looked like what I've been told Dolac does.

I think he was okay. I thought he was slow to react at times, especially in coverage, I don't think he will ever be a starter but I do think he can carve out a career as a key backup type player. He has the athleticism but seemed a little overmatched physically IMO and was chasing the play a bit. I am excited to watch his growth.
