Another reason they fired him so quickly could be that they’re spooked by the Jets’ already interviewing Vrabel, and they wanted to throw their hat in the ring before the Jets could quickly lock him up.  This could get interesting, this battle of egos between Kraft and Johnson.

And this is why Robert Kraft is a moron. You knew you were going to do this and let Mayo walk out there and coach a team to a victory. When you had the 1st seed locked up, and you knew you were going to fire him, why not fire him then? Why give him another game? Who are you trying to not look dysfunctional for?  If you want Vrabel, fire Mayo... tank the last game and go get Vrabel.

Wonder if that’s why they fired him?

I don’t think he was that great a coach but man, there’s been plenty more coaches given a longer leash whilst doing a worse job with more talent. Thought he’d be given another year seeing as the ties to the organization he has and the fact they’re clearly in a rebuild year with a talent lacking roster.

Or he was told before the game he was being let go, so tried like hell to win.  Sometimes coaches are told prior??  You'd think in this situation WRT the #1 pick they wouldn't do that, but never know.  The fact that he was fired 90 minutes after the game seems Kraft had decided prior to the game.

"Hello, Bob...Woody Johnson here.  As a fellow multimillionaire, could you pull a really stupid move, and take some of the focus off my boneheaded decisions?"

One has to wonder if Mayo was given directives to lose the game. And he being a former player, couldn't stomach the thought and winning cost him his job.

Nope after the Flores lawsuit there’s zero chance the Krafts are that stupid.

I’m pretty sure the writing was on the wall and Mayo knew he was done so he wanted to try to go out with a win, especially knowing it was an FU to the owner

Could see him being Vrabel's DC

Why would Saleh want to work for Vrabel?  I’m guessing he’d rather be in a situation where he’s have complete control of the defense.  San Fran fans are hoping he’ll be the new DC

Good on Kraft for recognizing the mistake, but man, how do you miss that bad?

He was already in the building for nearly 15 seasons (player and coach) and you gave him a clause that automatically made him head coach…

Don’t want to say racist. But him, Pierce, and Steve Wilkes were given one year for awful teams with no or rookie qbs while dennis Allen, Shurmur, and plenty of other terrible coaches get multiple years on multiple teams.

again, the best coach in the NFL won 4 games with that team last year. They set him up to fail.

I don’t at all buy that Mayo was set up.  If he was a temporary hire, they never would have selected a franchise QB at #4.

Plus the media reported that Kraft has been supportive of Mayo for weeks.   But the press release today was very revealing.

The mistake that Bob made was legally making Mayo the successor to Belichick.  It was a pretty stupid considering that Mayo not only had zero head coaching experience but also had a limited network for hiring assistants.

This season went very poorly - not only on the field - but also in public.  Mayo said something stupid every week and seemingly would throw others under the bus publicly.

At some point, I think Bob realized he screwed up with this and wanted to cut his losses.  I also think they feel the pressure to hire Vrabel or Ben Johnson and wanted an early start.

Mayo had a really bad roster but I thinks that due more to incompetence of the front office than having the deck stacked against him.
