Gruden has a 117-112 record as a head coach.  He's 5-4 in the playoffs.   Both his regular season and postseason records become sub .500 if we ignore 2002.

So let's look at that season.  It was Gruden's first year in Tampa.  He finished 12-4 and went 3-0 in the playoffs to win the Lombardi.  Did he just ride into the playoffs on Dungy's horse and or did he get the team over the hump?  Warren Sapp observed, "Tony baked the cake and Jon put the icing on it."  Maybe that's a fair take and both deserve credit.

But here's some context.  In the five years before the Super Bowl year, the Bucs won 58 regular season games under Dungy.  In the five years after the SB under Gruden, they won only 36 games.  Post SB, Gruden had a losing record with Tampa.  Some Buc fans rightfully believe that Gruden killed Dungy's horse.

So instead of Vrabel, let the Jets hire Gruden and his lifetime .511 record.  He's basically Marvin Lewis with more personality - sadly including hints of homophobia, misogyny, and racism.  As a owner, player, or fan, I wouldn't want him.

Vrabel has always scared me.  I hope the Jets go a different direction.

“Vrabel told The Athletic he spent the past year considering what he wants out of his next head-coaching job and formed three priorities: ownership, collaboration and quarterback.”

Im not sure it will be up to the Jets. Vrabel is the top coaching candidate on the market. I think the Jets are probably just a warm up interview for him.

I can’t see him picking the NYJ situation over some of the other jobs he may get offered. Unless they allow him to hand pick his own GM or something. But even then he would still have to deal with Woody overriding the coach+GM on a whim, because his son read something online or made a big play in Madden 😂

Are they going to hire a coach before hiring a GM?

I don't think any GM with a sane brain would be upset with that hire.

If it was a college coach, a first time HC, etc... there would be a lot more worry. Vrabel is wildly respected around the NFL (from what we all hear).

Come on man - nobody is hiring Jon Gruden.  I've read nothing in any of the prominent sites that even mentions him, let alone "serious candidate"

That being said, he is perfect for the Jets, and I would gladly eat my words if they hired him

Actually he already worked with the Saints last off season and installed their offense. I think he's a possibility there as well. Jets love the big splash hire that grabs headlines. Builds off-season excitement. This hire would meet both. There is thought that he's a candidate in what is considered a weak coaching candidate list outside Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel (who was passed over by everyone already last hiring cycle) and a couple others to lesser extents.

I could see the Jests being the last team to sign a HC rather than the first. Gruden sounds like the perfect candidate for them though.

Jests - Gruden

Bears - Ben Johnson

Saints - Joe Brady

Cowboys - Vrabel

Browns or Giants - Deion Sanders after drafting his son

Colts - Aaron Glenn ... I see the Lions losing both co-ordinators

The Bills did and look how it's worked out for them.

I'm pretty sure it was known that Beane was following McDermott all along.

Not sure this is the same thing.

I don’t know what’s online, but I am telling you I know first hand that I know Gruden is being discussed for multiple jobs and specifically that there is high mutual interest between the Jets and Gruden.

The complication is Grudens lawsuit, but that’s easily resolved if he drops the suit to get back in.  Mark my words, Gruden will be a HC either this year or next as he badly wants back on the sidelines.

As there should be.  Gruden Is a hell of a coach and got treated unfairly compared to how others have been.

Would vrabel hire the GM, like McDermott did here?

Pretty much. Whichever position (HC or GM) gets hired first obviously influences who gets hired into the other spot. You want guys who want to work together.

Vrabel doesn't seem like the guy who can win a championship, but he does seem like a guy who can make a 5-12/6-11 talent team work hard against every team they play.  I dont want a coach like him playing against the Bills twice a year.

What crazy team would do that?!?

The Bills had a GM when McDermott was hired. Whaley wasn’t canned until after the draft. Beane was hired like 5 months after McDermott. Of course I’m sure McDermott took one look at Whaley and told pegula no way and handed him Beane’s #.

Oh for sure. I'd even argue that was a worse way to handle it than if the Jets were to hire Vrabel and then a GM. At least the Jets know they have to replace both and will do so quickly. Stringing it along and keeping Whaley was a bad move. I understand they didnt want to lose all the scouting work, but we essentially lost out on Mahomes and directly created our biggest hurdle to a Championship because we couldnt take a QB until we had a new GM.

Yeah it was stupid to keep him but I also think McDermott is too much of a control freak to not have a proper amount of time to pick his QB. I get that too. Than again I personally don’t think that picking mahomes would have definitely made the Bills any more successful over the last 8 years. It’s possible but not guaranteed given all the variables.
