It's not that James Cook is not a good football player but this is not college

There's a salary cap

Paying Ezekiel Elliott wasn't worth it pay

most running backs are not worth

If he wants to come on a cheap deal that's one thing but if he wants to get paid like a top five running back.. we have way m positions and important guys we need tmo re sign over the next one two years

I'm re signing Greg R over him, Benford

.. he's not the first priority at the NFL levhel no matter how good of a season  having

So you might want to take a listen to the Greg Cosell segment on OBL this week

They talk about how in the past 5 years, the top 25 players in Y/Sc were WR but this season, 12 of them are RB and Brown wants Cosell's take on why. (this part is about 19:20 in) The gist that I got is that the cyclical nature of the NFL has turned; while a few seasons back, teams were passing all over the place now defenses have evolved to shut that down with playing more 2 high safety looks to take away the seam routes and with more athletic (usually smaller) linebackers and nickel defense to can take away the underneath routes.

So now offenses are back to depending more on the run game, which means running backs are getting paid.

I'm not sure that translates to "we ought to pay Cook", and I think the fact that he has a big brother now playing for the Cowboys and mouthing off ought to count against him in negotiations (only 1/2 kidding), but the point is...running backs are getting paid

That said - the guys who are getting paid north of $12M AAV are the dual-threat guys who can take over a game by themselves: Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, Alvin Kamera, Josh Jacobs.  They all have multiple 1000+ yd seasons and in the case of McCaffrey multiple 2000+ yd seasons in Y/Sc.  The next tier, the $8-10M guys, again, multiple 1000+ yd seasons.

Dalvin Cook tweeting about his bro getting $20M/yr - Good Luck with That.

The money at the running back position is just so small

Some players know the advantage of having a place where your wanted versus going to an unknown and getting a paycheck for a year maybe two

His blocking receiving and even running skills are very underrated and he's 100% one of the top guys I want back

No offense to James Cook but you can't really pay him so I would be ready to roll with Ray Davis and ty Johnson..  if Cook doesn't want to take a team deal

What about Ty Johnson's availability? Prior to 2024, has he struggled to remain available with anything above a sparse #3 workload? Sincere question.

He's OBVIOUSLY dynamic and versatile when he's healthy. His current role is also helping him remain healthy and explosive. Hell, I thought he looked pretty good returning kickoffs recently, didn't we all?

Perfect #3 RB talent. Great 3rd down guy, teams guy, everything guy. Can sub in for moderate carries too, probably. But will he accept the same kind of deal he's been working with each season so far? I'd expect some team to reach out with a deal more suited to #2 money for a couple/few years.

Will the Bills match it, or even have a chance to match it?

We're already fully there, aren't we? At least as much as we're going to be. "The run" isn't something that can consistently work without a similarly threatening pass game, unless of course that offense is willing to ONLY run well.

Offensive balance and general physicality is probably the notable hallmark of a contemporary Andy Reid/Matt Nagy attack. They attack ALL quadrants of the field at all times with all kinds of pre- and post-snap motions, and when they're able to control the LOS, they have success. (Reminds me of Brady's collaborative and dynamic approach to offensive football in 2024.)

The comeback of a cover two Shell which has completely came back in a big way to the NFL over the last couple of seasons has changed how it was played

For around a decade there was a bunch of cover three cover one bigger box shells.. which made it harder to consistently run the ball throughout a football game

The Josh Allen and Patrick mahomes area has pushed the lead back to a cover two leaving a lighter box and the opportunity for more consistent running

It's not that running wasn't a big part of the game.. it's that defensive schemes truly came to take those away because of the great generation of running backs in the 2000s

The passing game has made the league go back to a cover two shell which has allowed more consistent running

Well a third down running back could technically be on number two running back also depending on the system

If you're consistently out of shotgun you could bring those guys in more than just third down cuz they block well..

I wouldn't give ty Johnson any crazy money.. but I feel like he's the kind of guy who would take a solid veteran team deal.. knowing he's going to see a lot of Downs with Josh Allen

Like he's having a career catching , he probably won't even match that with a platoon deal with another team.. he's in the right spot

Its RB, there are hundreds of capable guys out there.  If Bills want him, they will get him.

I mean.  Even ESPN thinks RB's are interchangeable.  He looks a lot like Ray Davis to me.

With the increased play time , Ty Johnson has demonstrated that he belongs in the NFL.  this is his ONE chance to make it count.....He will be going to the team that gives him the highest money...and it won't be the Bills, especially if they pay Cook.

I'm sure they want him, but do they want him if it's more than vet minimum?

Ty will command 2 mil per on the market I believe. Vet. Min. Wont get it done.

And he would be totally fine doing that because he deserves it
