Wildcard game will be January 11, 12, or 13.

Forecasts still a few days out, but it's going to be cold - potentially record cold.

shocked I am.  In WNY in mid-January?  Impossible :)

Way too far out for any potential snow ideas, but the fact the lake waters are very warm still is never a good sign when the air temperature gets that cold.

I live in the North Country, which is usually colder than the 716.  I'm seeing Hi of 14 on Sat the 11th, Hi of 18, low of 7 on Sunday the 12th.  Normal January - although the forecast also says freezing fog, which could be sketchy.

Up by the Adirondacks and/or Tug Hill?

That place is brutal...they get both 5 feet of snow AND 30 below zero temps before the wind chill 😬

So in January it’s going to be cold in Western NY, the lakes will be warmer that the ambient temperature, and somewhere, not sure where, there will be lake effect snow bands?  These hobby forecasters really going out on a limb here.

From an experienced forecaster…there’s not a single numerical model that’s worth a damn outside of 96 hours.  There’s probably a greater than 90% chance the long range models (including ensembles) paint a completely false solution of what actual conditions will be.  A single minuscule and under calculated variable can be the difference between a record setting cold outbreak and a weekend that’s well within the climatological norms for Orchard Park.

What I love about models is you can always say in this instance, "Well, I guess that one in ten chance happened."  It's a great way to make predictions and never be wrong.

A numerical model is only as good as the data ingested into it and the forecaster initializing, verifying and manipulating it.

Well, it will be a little below average temp wise with highs in the low 20s and lows in the teens, but it won't be anything close to the Patriot wildcard weekend game where temps were like 2 or 3 degrees.
