Livinginthepast Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 He was on the cover of Sports illustrated and I always remember the "Can he take a hit" part of the article. If memory serves he was gimmick that didnt last that long. https://vault.si.com/vault/1982/04/26/but-can-he-take-a-hit Quote
Chaos Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 If Harlan wants to improve his relevance the actual expression should be "hurdling guys like they are Josh Allen". Renaldo Nehemiah never hurdled a player in the NFL, Quote

I'm old, so I get the reference, but I couldn't help but wonder how many people who are younger than, say, 60, knew who he was talking about. Nehemiah was a track star who never competed in an Olympics (thanks to the US boycott in 1980) and who played a little football but took his last snap 40 years ago. I've noticed this a lot lately, announcers who make references to guys who played in the '60s and '70s, which probably sounds a lot to most viewers like it did to me when announcers used to say "he sure looks like YA Tittle" or some such nonsense. I'm just venting. I always enjoyed it when announcers referred to guys I'd never seen like Y.A. Tittle or Otto Graham. I'd go read about them and I'd feel like I had some sense of their style. Always made me feel like I was getting deeper into the world of football. Oh, and I like Harlan. 2 hours ago, Dan Darragh said: The last time I saw Jim Brown he was running from the cops. Last time I saw Jim Brown he was threatening to mount a comeback in his sixties. And he looked tough and capable enough even then that it almost seemed like he still had a shot. ControllerOfPlanetX Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 At least he didn’t say he had “the speed of Charley Paddock.” Quote

Everytime I hear Harlan I can't help but be reminded of Marv Albert. There's just something about the old timey quality of his voice. Quote
