The two massive coaching blunders this year cost us the 1 seed. Going for 3 straight passes and leaving enough time for Houston to get the ball back and kick a game winning field goal and choosing to accept the penalty on Los Angeles instead of 4th and 7 which would have no doubt resulted in a field goal. Just terrible. The gauntlet of how the playoffs look like they are going to play out is tragic. If we see the ravens,  which is more than likely, I unfortunately see us getting bounced in the divisional round. Hopefully chargers or Pittsburgh can beat them in the wildcard…

Of course, McDermott gets no credit for the Bills win over the Chiefs.

We were never getting that 1 seed. 16-1 is an extremely unrealistic expectation for even the best teams.

Need a lot of luck too and the Chiefs had that as well this season.

I’ve stated many times my opinion on McClapper’s end of half/ game shenanigans. Suffice it to say, it is NOT his strong suit!

My buddies, with big Falcon futures were flaying Raheem Morris for similar buffoonery v.s. Washington last night.

They said:

“Man it is getting real bad. 32 coaches, the best at their jobs and they can not manage clock and or timeouts.”

“Morris made a complete balls of that. Call a time out as he had another one in the bank. Some of the worst mismanagement ever

35 secs on the clock, call time out then throw some incomplete passes, no problem throw a decent completion call time out.

FG would have been much closer. He cost his team big time, and now we get his mealy mouthed explanation. Brutal.”

I responded:

It’s an epidemic and clearly, it is NOT one of the subject areas for HCing interviews!  It is an absolute must! You need to get 80% on a rapid fire, 25 question test, on time left, score, distance, play call and use of TOs.

And if you’re already a brain dead dunce- like so many are, on this critical aspect of the game, then you need to hire somebody who isn’t… whose only job (other than prep) is to stand right beside you for the last 5 minutes of the Half & Game telling you exactly what to do and not do.

Pay them $4-5k per game. Who cares. It’s a trillion dollar biz.

Or the Lions!

For some people, when the Bills win, it's the players, and when they lose, it's the coaches.

For some others, when the Bills win, well, they're supposed to, and when the Bills lose, it's because Beane didn't get the right players.

I'd love to talk to McDermott about his philosophy. I think it's similar to but not as well developed as Belichick's. I think McDermott believes deeply that 11 athletes playing as a fully integrated team will beat 11 athletes, some of whom are more talented than his, who are less well integrated.  I think we've seen it McDermott's defense for several years now. The Bills don't have a starter on defense, and haven't had a starter on defense for several years, who is the best player in the league at his position.  Not Hyde, not Poyer, not White, not Rousseau, not Milano. But McDermott gets his players to integrate and as a team to blanket the field to prevent explosive plays and to make big stops at the goal line and on fourth and one or two.

This season, he's got an offense like that.  They don't have a dominant receiver, and they don't have a dominant running back.  They have an excellent offensive line, but the talking heads talk about the Chiefs' interior linemen, not the Bills'. They rave about other offensive tackles, but not the Bills'.  But the Bills have a fully integrated offense that adjusts over and over again to take advantage of gaps in the defense, wherever they are.

What McDermott has done is pretty amazing. Next season, there will be a talent upgrade. The defense will improve, and the offense will, too.

Pretty amazing, except McDermott cost the Bills the number one seed, so I guess he needs to go. 😄

I think that's spot on as to his defensive philosophy. Unfortunately this season it isn't working so well. On defense at the moment the total is not greater than the sum of the parts the way it has been in previous seasons. They have made as many mental errors in the last month or so as in some entire seasons previously. Their fundamentals are way below their usual standard.

Look man I thought there was zero Chance kc would run the table. Plus the 3 games in ten days. If buffalo wins 14 games, it will be the first time in 20 years a 14 win team didn't get the one seed.

They got it done. Sometimes you gotta just tip your cap.

We'll see them in arrowhead

I agree completely with this. I think the reason is talent.  The team concept is great so long as the talent differential doesn't get too large.  So, when you're playing Hyde, Poyer, and White in their primes, you don't have the best player at his position (compared to the best players in the league), but you're very good.  Benford in my mind already may be playing at a White level, but Rapp and Hamlin/Bishop are a couple notches below Poyer and Hyde. Other than Rousseau and maybe Oliver, the Bills aren't getting any high-level play out of their d-linemen.

That's why I think next season will be special. I like Carter, and I think we'll see more of him. I think Bishop will make a step up, and the experience he's getting now will help a lot. Milano will return to form or be replaced. They'll probably get some help in the draft or free agency.  When the Bills upgrade their talent next season, the team concept will make the defense special again.

As always, great post and spot on! 13 - 3 at the moment and a perennial playoff team, I’ll take the last six years to include 13 seconds over 2000 - 2016 and I honestly believe we will win a SB. I’m just enjoying the ride!

In the same way that @Simon combined any thread about outside punditry drivel, called "Random talking head says something about the Bills," I wish he would do the same thing for threads like this. Maybe call it "Random TBW poster has crap take."
