Daboll with a surprisingly high 70% win rate.

PS, with all charts, the team logo can be off by a couple % points. Its minor, but just FYI.

interesting. Today I learned to never blindly trust Pro Football Reference.

Why?

Pro Football Reference shows McD with 13 challenges over the past 3 seasons, with 5 of those 13 being wins.

mcdchalpfr.jpg

My program shows 14 challenges with 6 wins.

At first I assumed that my program was wrong, because why would PFR have incorrect data?

But then I pulled the actual play by play data, and it turns out that my program is right and PFR is wrong. There are 14 challenges by Buffalo over the past 3 seasons and we won 6 of them.

When you add other teams to this platform, and start charging a subscription fee.  As you absolutely should, assuming its actually this good.  (unless I missed the live link here) ..My suggestion is you keep it free for registered members of TBD.  Show us some hometown love.

Thank you for that link.  I wanted to cross-reference challenges across all coaches.  I have a disagreement with a friend who says that all coaches suck at challenges and game clock management, so I'm trying to either prove or disprove my hypothesis that the Bills coach is really bad at challenges compared to the rest of the league.

Does it have down and distance?  I frankly don't care if the call on the field is upheld or reversed.  I'm interested in correlating the useless challenges, like a 5 yard completion on 2nd and 6, etc.  And I want to do that against all coaches.

Is there the ability to break down offensive and defensive personnel/packages/coverage scheme/fronts etc on a per game basis

Yep..... but i'm a little scared to put that feature on the online version for everyone. In order to use those calls it scrapes PFF data. I'm uncertain how PFF would respond to that being public.

PFR is far from perfect.

Just this chart alone is worth the price of admission.

Not surprised to see O'Connell and Reid in the upper right.  Vikings are a well coached team:  see Darnold, Sam.  Nice to see Daboll making good decisions.  McDermott is about where I'd expect, a bit less than a coin flip success rate and a median number.  Small sample size, but I'd bet he's been a little better this year.

I hear what you are saying about scraping data.  I have a little personal experience with that starting years ago and it can be touchy.  I'd bet a paid site would be unhappy at best, I too would steer clear of that here.

Yea they'd shut you down pretty quick I reckon even though you are not trying to monetise it.

I wonder if PFR hasn't updated since the challenge in November.

Thank you for not only the hard work, but the excellence of the work.

This is really a significant accomplishment.  Kudos and thanks again to you.

👍

@Einstein this does look like a real triumph as a piece of work. How does one access it? Or do we need to wait until its uploaded onto a domain? Tech is definitely not my bag if you can't tell

Thank you! I’m happy to send you the project files that you can run locally on your computer. But you will need to have an understanding of R and running servers.

Or you can use the website version I will publish this upcoming week. I think i’m going to take the advice someone gave earlier in this thread and have an advanced option for folks like you who want to drill down deep, and a simple version for those who want access to quick info.

I just don’t understand why. The data is updated near constantly throughout the game.

In fact, I’m thinking about adding a feature that rapidly tracks every play the Bills run throughout the game, producing the EPA for each, and predicting the next.

So I dont know why they wouldn’t have that data by now.

I don't even understand what the top para means. So yea, I'll wait 😄

Added another chart option today. It shows how often teams pass the ball based on the score differential of the game (winning/losing and by how much).

Mentioned this in another thread too but the only team who runs the ball more when theyre losing is the Ravens.
