I loved the suggestion here that broadcasts/livestreams have the option of crowd noise only, blocking out the announcers completely.

Almost every NFL play-by-play guy has annoyed the crap out of me and pissed me off on a pretty regular basis. I'm one of those guys who naturally blocks out the diarrhea coming out of their mouths. Often I'll be asked who the announcing crew is and I won't know the answer.

Greg Gumbel was one of the few exceptions.

He was an easy listen, an astute observer and all-around super solid. He was very likable to boot.

RIP Greg.

Just a real hard working, likable guy that loved what he was doing. I thought his play by play was top notch and he always brought out the best in his color partners. He did his best work as studio host for the NFL and college basketball. He had a long distinguished career and I was a fan.

Spot on 💯!! Complete calm and in our current era of annoying over the top “takes” he was the antithesis of current media.

What is at a minimum equal to media being "over the top", is us at large. Quite likely, we are worse and far more hypocritical.

Not really. Fans are going to support teams and over analyze everything. The current sports media driven by espn and ratings generates sports discourse and controversy as a business model. And imho it is over the top and not always productive or of value. And yes we do feed off of that.
Greg Gumbel seemed to deliver information in a way that was informative and helpful. I get that his role was not opinion based. But on all topics when issues were discussed he brought logic and reasoning.

I saw him in a McDonald's over 30 tears ago. Lived in Bristol,CT about a quarter mile from  ESPN. Could actually see it if I walked out to the street. I think he was interviewing for a job there and I wet into the Mc Donald's across the street. He then walked in.

I liked the Gumbel brothers for different reasons.  I’m sorry for his family as I approach my mid 50’s, 78 is not that old.  With Bryant, I always think of good investigative interviews with the Today show, and the Olympics.  With Greg, it was always the NCAA tourney, and most importantly on Sundays.  He was excellent.

RIP Greg.
