waterglass Posted Monday at 03:31 PM Posted Monday at 03:31 PM (edited) I love what he has done but I dont love his Defensive coaching scheme as it doesnt blend with his defensive line players that he wanted and they drafted. In my opinion all are great people but for D lineman they are all undersized as in simply too small. Thats my opinion having watched pro ball for over 50 years. Yep, I am an old goat but I do see it. Have you ever played football either with or without pads and block or run into someone who is 6" taller and / or 50 pounds heavier than you? They dont even feel it as its like your a mosquito. Thats my feeling with Ed O and AJ Epo and some others and when they are up against guys with their big boy pants on, forget about it. Then there was yesterday against the Patriots. As in huh? The Patriots O line. Remember the 1st two defensive series against Detroit. I loved it. Moving forward coach needs to realize that thse guys are simply too small for the position they were drafted. Forget about quickness over brawn. It doesnt work in this case and proof is all over the league. Just look at the teams rosters by O line position and height and weight. Why did coach ever think like that because some guy by the name of Andy Reid fired coach McDermott as Eagles D Coordinator years ago. So did Andy see what we are seeing on the field today with the D line? Coach needs to do some deep soul searching if he evens gets that chance. He could go the way of Rex Ryan. Rex had it all as Jim Schwartz wanted to be his D Coordinator. Schwartz is a TOP D Coordinator IMO. Same as Mike Pettine. I loved watching their D back in the day. It was exciting. But Rex went with the family affair. Jeesh. Now our D is always on the D. Its always been that way ever since McDermott came here in 2017. So is his D style a bunch of smoke and mirrors just like Rex? I mean when it really counts as in the playoffs. His defensive backs saved him yesterday. Coach please reconsider and start drafting big boy D linemen. https://www.reddit.com/r/Patriots/comments/1hityme/we_already_know_the_oline_is_but_these_pff_grades/ Edited Monday at 03:32 PM by waterglass 1 1 Quote
SunDSolar Posted Monday at 03:40 PM Posted Monday at 03:40 PM I didn't read but our defensive scheme doesn't match with having the best player in football. Our defense bend, don't break(been breaking lately) style keeps Josh Allen off the field for long periods of time. A team with a brain and running game in the playoffs is going to be a BIG problem 9 13 1 2 1 Quote

For all of the Reid, Mahomes, Kelce hype the Chiefs defense is the one who is the backbone of the team led by Jones. The Bills need to build a bigger more physical defense. Similar to what the Steelers have. Of course, having a player of TJ Watt's caliber doesn't hurt. 3 Quote

Also bringing up Andy Reid firing is irrelevant. Philly’s defense got actually worse after McDermott left and Reid would go 8-8 and 4-12 before getting the axe. If you want to use yesterday’s game as evidence - who did NE have the most success going after? Spector, Elam, Lewis, Bishop… it’s no coincidence. The argument continues to be whether it’s scheme or talent. It’s a chicken vs. egg argument. This season they were limited with cap space so they brought back Jones and AJ on modest deals and filled depth with their usual veterans. They were also stuck with the Von Miller contract. But the main area to criticize continues to be the defensive line. There’s been multiple premium picks thrown at the DL. The first rounders of Rosseau and Oliver are solid but not consistently elite. AJ Epinesa has a ceiling of a backup pass rusher and doesn’t defend the run well. Boogie Basham was a flat out bust. Then you have DeWayne Carter who despite being being a rookie 3rd rounder, has not looked all that promising as of late. Their big swings have ultimately failed as well. Von Miller’s trajectory plummeted which he blew his ACL. Then there was Star Lotulelei - another big swing signing that failed. By the way, Star’s not the type of the DL you are describing. So I do think there’s a lot of blame you can throw at McDermott and Beane for how they went about building their defensive line. I’m almost certain this offseason will be about rebuilding the trenches. Von, DaQuan, and maybe even AJ will be gone - I’d expect them to go after a much different type of 1TDT that controls the LOS and keeps the LB’s clean. 26 minutes ago, Gregg said: It's one of the main reasons Mahomes has championships and Allen doesn't. This is what the Bills thought they were getting Von. While Rosseau and Oliver have been good in spurs, Buffalo has never had that type of player. 4 Quote
Blackbeard Posted Monday at 04:18 PM Posted Monday at 04:18 PM (edited) Reinvent himself? Where are we getting this crap from? There should be just ONE Crap on McD thread. This is about the 29th. Some of you are TRULY delusional. Edited Monday at 04:19 PM by Blackbeard 4 2 1 2 Quote
notpolian Posted Monday at 04:19 PM Posted Monday at 04:19 PM Yup, changes need to happen for the Bills to have a good chance in the playoffs. There are always bounces and strange things that can happen in any one game, but beating 4 good teams in a row is almost impossible with a defense like this. 3 2 Quote
billsherd Posted Monday at 04:23 PM Posted Monday at 04:23 PM I think they will have something little different for playoffs this year if they have all top three LB and secondary in tact. 2 Quote

I am still hoping for the #1 seed, so they don't have to play WC weekend. But they have to at least get the #2 seed. I don't want the Bills to go in as the #3 seed. That could set them up for a road game at Pitt/Bal. I especially don't want the Bills to have to go to Baltimore. If they have to play them then at least get the game in OP. The Bills being a very good home team would have a much better chance beating them at home. 1 3 Quote

CincyBillsFan Posted Monday at 04:26 PM Posted Monday at 04:26 PM Lets wait until the end of the season. I mean the Bills still have a decent chance to get to and win a Super Bowl. As an aside, McD does seem to be in the process of changing his coaching philosophy. His challenge in making the necessary changes is not to throw the baby away with the bath water. 1 Quote

Turnovers come from mistakes, and mistakes are more likely to happen when you're forced to run more plays. 1 Quote

The Bills should win both if they play better than yesterday. However I just don't see KC losing to Pittsburgh and Denver the way this year has gone. KC has been really lucky and they are super clutch when needed. The biggest things are I don't want to play Cincinnati (unlikely) in the wild card and am definitely not at all looking forward to Baltimore (likely) in the divisional round. 1 Quote

A team with a brain and running game in the playoffs is going to be a BIG problem I don’t think McD intentionally employs a bend don’t break defense. Given that something like 2/3rds of the yards in the NFL are gained through the air, he defends the pass first. But he also plays the cards he’s dealt and does the best he can to defend both. I’ll guess he doesn’t want to bend or break. 1 Quote

T.E. Posted Monday at 05:03 PM Posted Monday at 05:03 PM As the playoff picture currently stands, we will be at a coaching disadvantage in every possible postseason matchup outside of Houston, whom we have very little chance of playing. Josh is going to have to have a legendary run of games for the Bills to overcome that. It is what it is. 1 1 3 1 Quote

Other than the Rams game, when the DL gets some pressure on the QB they haven't been all that bad. This defense succeeds often when the DL gets pressure as with most defenses. Quote
