There seems to be a new position in football over recent years, something called EDGE (not Edge, mind you, but EDGE).  I think it's what we used to call Defensive End.

It's been a few minutes since I was in grammar school, but if the letters are all capitalized this indicates that it is an acronym.  The mystery: what is it an acronym for?

After considerable thought, I have come to the idea that it stands for Early Detection Game Exploder.  But I'm not sure.

What do you folks think?  This is really important, and since we have no Miami Haiku weeks left this season, time to put your creative minds to other constructive endeavors.

I hear ya, Dan.

I thought the same thing a number of years back.

The best that I can reckon is that an EDGE player is a much more EXTREME player than a DE.

Pretty sure it's either a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB

It's this. It means someone whose primary roles are to set the edge and rush the passer from the outside. It's a way of distinguishing those players from other outside linebackers who play a more traditional off the ball role such as the one Milano or Williams plays for the Bills.

It's a fair point on the capitalisation. I'm not sure why when it arose initially it was capped. It is probably because all other position codes are capped - DE, DT, WR etc... but as the OP points out those are all acronyms of sorts. So some might just see it as a consistency thing.... but I do increasingly see it uncapped as well.

Evil Doers Go Extreme

edge rusher which is a 4-3 DE or a  3-4 OLB that will rush the passer or back off and cover TE/RB like Von Miller.

4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB tend to have very similar body frames.
in 3-4 the DT tends to be much bigger and the ILB smaller , in a 4-3 the DT are smaller than the NT while the MLB is a bigger size

A similar position but no name yet that is a cross between DB and LB where they can come up for run support, blitz, is a good tackler, and can play DB.  This is usually a SS/3CB type of player like Taron

This, most nickel defenses are pretty much a 3-3-5 look. It just gives you an under or over look with 4 down lineman in some way. The Edge is your pass rusher/drop zone player. It eliminates the designation of DE as well, making lineman and qbs have to identify the edge on pass rush situations

Are we talking pushing the edge, or are we talking the bleeding edge? Just fort clarification…,

Not a new position. When player agents saw that their pass-rushing LB clients were making much less than DEs, they didn’t like this. Especially when the franchise tag was much more for DEs. So, they made a “new” position, which would have different financial considerations. The EDGE was born. But, on the field, this is not a new position.
