He definitely has the range and the phsicaly profile to suggest he should be able to play free safety but at the moment I don't think he is close to there mentally. Still way too many mistakes.

He’s going to be opposite of Rapp next year at Safety and has been playing there now in replacement of Hamlin.

Not directed at you, but I’m sick of the he’s Rapps backup and the same player. He’s clearly going to be the starter next year and possibly in these playoffs and Rapp isn’t going anywhere so there is a plan to make Rapp and Bishop work as the pairing moving forward

McDermott's presser is below. About 7:47 mark where the question about Bishop expanded role being answered. Said something like 4 games span improvement, taking notes blah blah blah

I saw this yesterday and thought it was very interesting the "taking notes" thing was McDs big takeaway on the improvement over the last 4 games - and the mention of Hyde helping him out.  I recall earlier in the year McD mentioning 'preparation' with Bishop as well.  It seems to me there was a perception that he wasn't putting in the work off the field which was translating to mistakes on it.  I thought this was a little odd since you would think a rookie playing at a position that requires a lot of mental processing, while sure lacking knowledge/experience, would at least be showing an eagerness and willingness to work at learning and prep - doesn't seem like that was the case.  It seems like at least they think it is correctable with proper off field habits

I am just not sold yet that he is ready for that. He has done some the last two games, agreed. But he really wasn't good against New England. I thought he'd been on a nice upward curve but Sunday was a step back.

I really hope they make Rapp and Bishop work. I do not want them to have to spend another day 1/2 pick on a safety.

He isnt ready for that, right now. And he wont be completely ready for it by the opener next year. But (imo) he'll be our starting FS for next season and we will have to live with the growing pains and development again next year. And I dont think it will be so bad.

And after that, we'll have our starting FS locked down for the next 8 years.

I noticed that too. I've never been to a film room, college or pro, so I don't know how individual player learns thru these class room sessions and applies to practice field and ultimately on Sundays. If I have to guess, different guys do it differently. You have Elam who kept notes from college, and I assume he continued that approach in NFL and the notes might double or triple in size by now. But what has that approach got him so far? Lawrence Taylor never took any notes from what I hear, and he's a HoFer.

I'd think for a coach like McDermott, seeing a player taking notes is a sign of learning. I'd be too if I were in his position. Belichick mentioned that he's in heaven when he saw D players (Bruschi, Vrabel etc.) talking balls even in watching college games like scenarios, what they would do etc. That's another sign of learning. But there is more to it - Elam is an example. I do believe his pre-draft interview of showing his notes probably scored very high in McDermott's book.

How many elite talents does that include?

Allen, Johnson Brown, and Rousseau.  I would make an argument for Cook and Benford.  Thats 4-6.  Dawkins and Milano were not his draft so I left them off.

And yet I think only two of those guys have seen a pro bowl. The fact is we have a lot of above average players. Very few great ones.

That is every team.  The very good players what has made Buffalo consistent over the last 7 years.  Every team has a handful of guys.  What is behind it makes a team good or not.  The browns have the best defensive player in the league and a top corner.
