They were scoring regardless - literally every drive except for one. I would much rather take my chances blitzing.

 

Yes - they may score more quickly. But they may also force a turnover. Regardless, either of those are better than dying a slow death. The absolute worst thing we could do is allow them 10 play drives that take 5+ minutes off the clock.

Our entire defensive philosophy can be summarized as “hope the opposing offense makes a mistake”. Well, they weren’t making mistakes that week. So you have to do *something* to try and force them into a mistake.

I would have blitzed them relentlessly.

 

They were attacking intermediate zones. All blitzing against a vet QB like Stafford does is open up those zones. They should have gone to way more 3 man rush, push the safeties up 5 yards and flood the intermediate area of the field. If he wants to throw over the top of you fine - Kupp and Nacua aren't burners. But they will eat if you leave the middle of your defense exposed.

The Pats* game was unusual though. The Bills had 6 PI calls against them. The only other game close to that was the Rams game with 5 PI calls against.

 

On top of the PI calls, the Bills had two illegal formations, one offensive holding and an unnecessary roughness. All very inconsistent and subjective calls. 

 

Along with defensive improvement, the Bills need to have the refs call less panalities on them. 

 

Again, the defense is not good, but this sort of officiating certainly contributed to the closeness of the game.

Is it just me or is the Bills defense better in 3rd and short (6 yards or less) when compared to 3rd and long (7 yards to 99).  It just not in the McD era, I mean since the 80"s.  I always say 3rd and long is automatic for the opposing offense verses the bills.

The Bills led the NFl in this category in 2021 and wee 6th in 2022.  The dropped off in 2023 to 19th and are 29h this year.  I think the biggest issue the past two years has been the decline of safety play, combined with the injury issues at LB.   I believe you did predict the safety issue.😂

Defense was actually better than my initial reaction watching live yesterday. 1st and 2nd down defense was actually pretty good. 3rd down defense was bad. HORRIBLE. They really need to figure 3rd down out. Ya Ya, I know they had starters out, but this has been the case all season, backups or not. I really think after re watching, and after Allen's post game comments, this team is really playing vanilla. It was very obvious watching a second time. Anyways just my 2 cents

Just once can we be prepared for a screen pass?  Can we go a game without committing Pass Interference on third down, and instead actually knock the ball away?

 

This defense really does nothing well consistently.  I don't know how anyone believes this will go well in the playoffs.

 

One thing I noticed was how easy Phillips gets chipped/moved sometimes. His technique seems to be lacking some.
