That is perception. The statistical reality is the Bills have been a consistently good 3rd down team under this staff. This year they are like 6 percentage points worse than their worst year previously under McD.

I think a lot of that perception comes from how ridiculous some of those occasional conversions are.

Look at the one last week vs DET. They've got them locked up in 3rd/17 in their own end, about to get the ball back with a chance to put a 4th qrtr nail in the coffin. Suddenly you get a tipped ball that ends up going for a 60-70 yrd TD which puts the Lions right back in the game.

Plays like that stand out and tend to skew reality, imo.

Yesterday looked like a preseason game.

If they weren't full vanilla - they were at least partially vanilla.  I think that's a good call.  Do enough to win these last few games, and hopefully get some real strategy & some wrinkles going in the playoffs.

Just a few thoughts. The offensive game plan was as vanilla as it gets. I actually wonder after re watching it, if they had any kind of plan, or if they were just calling random plays. Shakir had quite a few drops, which again kinda makes me wonder how much they really practiced some of these plays

Defense was actually better than my initial reaction watching live yesterday. 1st and 2nd down defense was actually pretty good. 3rd down defense was bad. HORRIBLE. They really need to figure 3rd down out. Ya Ya, I know they had starters out, but this has been the case all season, backups or not. I really think after re watching, and after Allen's post game comments, this team is really playing vanilla. It was very obvious watching a second time. Anyways just my 2 cents

The Rams game was basically a preseason defense, no adjustments.

Exactly. Can't criticize Diggs for the Chiefs drop and give Shakir a pass

Diggs' outspoken personality and disruptive behavior brings more scrutiny and with that comes more criticism.  He was also paid about 20x what Shakir is paid and is a veteran player who was a team captain so more is expected of him. (Notwithstanding all of this, yes, I'd like to see Shakir pull some of those in.)

I see where you are coming from

I try (and fail frequently) to keep emotion out of my criticisms

I think the endzone play was a great play by the defender and no criticism of Shakir on that.

The drop on the deep shot before the half was really unfortunate.  That was a beautiful throw by Josh and would have put them in the red zone at least.  It was a catchable ball that he needs to make more than not.

The Bills defense created 2 key turnovers by the Patriots and are receiving no credit what so ever..

Also, the Bills defense didn't allow 40 points, another plus :w00t:

3rd down defense in big moments has been consistently bad for 3 years or so. Numbers on a screen can’t show you that.

As far as back-breaking 3rd and longs being converted, there’s been much improvement this year UNTIL the Rams game. Last year was awful.

I’m wondering if the game plan and talk about not putting much on film for the playoffs was sorta b.s. but more about having to play them in 2 weeks.

And if by some miracle the 1 seed is on the line then we will unload.  Advantage us.

If it’s a meaningless game then that’s that.

It’s irrelevant.

Like the Chiefs and Ravens don’t thoroughly know or have us scouted already.

He 100% absolutely needs to catch one of the balls from Allen.  Receivers make those catches all the time and he was unable to hall in either of them.

Shakir doesn't make those catches. It generally turns out bad when we try to throw him the ball downfield. I guess I'm fine that we gave him a couple shots just to prove those shouldn't be part of the playbook any longer. Use him where he belongs - in the short and occasionally intermediate areas with room to run after the catch.

On top of that, that last TD was basically garbage time.

The NFL zebras gave the Pats 11 plays after they got to the 8. Lots of BS PI calls, and egregious overlooking of holding penalties not called on New England.

That would have been infuriating if the game was still up in the air.  As it was, I felt pretty sure we were going to win at that point.

Me too, but with frozen ground the onside recovery was anything but certain.

maybe you and I are in the minority, but in most games, none of those are PI calls. I thought the refs were calling a lot of suspect ones all game— ones that maybe could Be PI, but are usually never called. For example, the first one on Elam, is the normal hand fighting that occurs on those back shoulder end zone throws where both guys have hands on the other.

Meanwhile, a very physical and sticky man to man D like New England gets no PI or illegal contact or defensive holding calls for the entire game?

Gonzalez is and other top tier corners are allowed to be very handsy. A Bills defense known for zone and timing don’t get that break. I’m sure NFL officials have some bit of game prep before each matchup, who to watch out for, what kinds of penalties teams normally commit. As it was the penalties were 13 to 5. With 6 of 13 being pre-snap. Of the PIs I felt Elam’s final penalty where he was guarding 2 defenders was understandable. That said giving up a TD or committing a PI is something I’m sure coaches will love with. Didn’t Maye nearly fumble away the ensuing snap? As it was expecting smaller 5’9” Cam Lewis to guard a 6’5” TE is not the matchup Babich should want.
