PoundingDog Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I don't know. Elam has no feel for the game in general. He's not beat outright (like chasing his guy or bit to the wrong way and can't recover) due to his physical traits. But the next level where a top CB kind of knows when and where the balls is coming (reading the nuances of the guy in front of you etc.), he's nowhere close after 3 years now. 1 3 Quote
All_Pro_Bills Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Elam deserved those PIs but in his defense he was the only Bills defender close enough to a receiver to get called. 1 Quote

He had an easy matchup against one of the worst WR groups in the NFL and gave up a bunch of chunk plays, whether on legit catches of penalties. I'm concerned that we don't have any legit CB2 on the roster right now. Defenses just keep attacking that side of the field for the past few weeks and it's too easy for them. I think the Bills remember last year against the Chiefs and dont want a repeat of that and feel that they can get by the Patriots and the Jets without forcing our main guys that are nicked to play heavy reps in these games. Almost got caught today but we didn't. I suspect if this was a more important game a lot of the injured guys would have played today. Quote

It's also 3rd/5 and his primary responsibility is to attack the sticks first and then recover the best he can if they go over top of him. His recover was very good as was his coverage, Maye just dropped a ball on time in the only tiny window that was even remotely open. Elam is inconsistent and lacks awareness in general. I want him to succeed, but even on that 1st TD throw, he needs to get his head around. Only reason he had to recover is he's slow to move his feet/recognize the route. He's amazingly athletic, but isn't twitchy and slow to recognize most route concepts. Not to mention he's not an aggressive tackler. Too often he "received" the blow. He's an average player. Flashes at times. There's a reason Vanpelt barely attacked Benford. Said a million times, if Elam wasn't a 1st rounder, everyone would be agreeing that he's average and have no problem when he's a healthy scratch. 1 Quote

He runs routes with WRs the way you want. Just has some issues at the catch point which a good man CB coach/scheme can likely fix. Quote

The reason he had to recover is because he has to play the sticks first, which means letting a guy get even with him at the line to gain. From that point it is now a race to the catch point and if he turns his head around he loses that race every time. He was still in that guy's shirt and it took what was literally a perfect throw to beat him by a couple inches on a down where his primary responsibility was 20 yrds behind him. 1 Quote

I mean that I don't feel confident either Elam or Douglas are CB2s. Douglas almost certainly will be back as the starter there once he's recovered, I thought there was a chance Elam could steal the job but he was just okay last week and bad this week so that seals it. I wasn't happy with Douglas' play in his last couple games either though. I'm worried he hit the age 30 wall and can't hang with NFL athletes. When it happens it happens suddenly. 1 Quote

This one is going to eat at the souls of the Pats. Interesting to see how they respond in the game in two weeks. Any win down the stretch may cost the Patriots draft choice Travis Hunter. I think some of their fans appreciate the hard fought game but an L Quote

Not exactly what you expect from a first round pick with several years of experience. Sorry he gets an F from me so we can average it to a D 😂 1 Quote

I agree that Douglas play has dropped off as well. I'm hoping its just a blip but I would much rather see Douglas out there than watch Elam out there in playoff time. The teams starting CB is not on the current roster next year 1 1 Quote

HappyDays Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago 25 minutes ago, Freddie's Dead said: The TD against him was just a big boy throw from Maye. It was a great throw but let's not give too much credit to Elam either. He gave up leverage to his man and left space for the throw to be fit into. It is not a case of "nothing he can do." What he could have done is prevented a JAG receiver from bullying him along the sideline and making a pretty effortless catch by NFL standards. If Elam can't stop that play he is practically useless as a starter in the NFL because that's the kind of play his skill set is supposed to be good for. Quote
Warcodered Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago If only he had some sort of catchy nickname like worcestershire, Honey BBQ, or some other Sauce based thing he'd be a great CB. Quote
