But otherwise in cases where a ball hits the back of a defender it should NEVER be DPI.

This happened earlier when Allen's ball hit the helmet of a Pats linebacker. Just good coverage.

Just speaking in general, I really don't know what the officials are thinking or how they're trained when it comes to calling penalties.

If I was training them my criteria for a foul would be:

1) How egregious is the foul?

2) Did it have any bearing on the outcome of the play?

Based on a summation of those two considerations a flag would be thrown or not.

It seems increasingly like NFL officials just can't resist the temptation to throw a flag, no matter how marginal the infraction is.

So you would make it 100% subjective?

Elam isn't great, but I think Douglas has fallen off so hard (age and injuries while not being the fastest to start) elam might be who we role with.

He's always around the ball, so there is a chance he gets away w grabs or makes some plays, but he reminds me of a slick wr who just doesn't catch well.  Kinda the gave Davis of CBS at this point

I don't really agree with your characterization, partly because I don't know the actual language of the rule.

But I bet I could write the rule more simply than it is currently written.

Hot takes only. I know there’s a pretty good Reddit thread pricing Elam ~ Douglas if not better when targeted in 2024, but TBD is bought dem hawt takes. We want hawt takes and hawt wings.

I get the complaints but don’t get the hate.

The coverage is solid but he needs to start getting his head around as best as he can.

He’s an ok corner. Not great, not terrible. Will give up some plays, will make some others.

Can’t have blue chip talent at all 22 guys fielded as starters.

The hate is easy to get as you expect a better return on investment for a player Beane traded up for at the back third of the first round of the draft.  Ironically, if we picked Benford in the first and Elam in the fifth we'd be saying Elam was a good depth pick at the position.  We got a pretty good glimpse on Sunday of why he's been a healthy inactive on some gamedays this year.  You just can't trust him not to make a back breaking penalty despite being the most athletic CB on the team.

For a 4th-round CB I'd be disappointed but could understand being a 4th rounder. As a first-rounder, he's horrendous. One of Beane's few mistakes for sure.

He has a head coach who stresses defense and lives and dies with zone principles.  They used a precious first round pick on a CB with great measurables, but no experience in a zone system.  Then said head coach won't play the guy because he has no zone experience.  Circular firing squad in 1,2.....

So the real question is, do you put blue cheese or ranch on your Elam’s?!

It's very very clear that at this point he's  no longer keeping him out because he has no zone experience. That was a year or two ago.

At this point they're keeping him out because Benford is better. Douglas also, but not so much lately. Douglas may be coming back to Elam, whether from age or injury or whatever.

Joe Marino in his All-22 review:

"Kaiir Elam, definitely not as bad as I think some people felt watching the broadcast tape.

"On the one touchdown that he gave up to Kayshawn Boutte, I thought it was a really silly defensive play call on a third and four if I'm not mistaken, just straight man coverage and Drake Maye just hit his back foot and threw it up.It was a great throw, it was a great catch but let's not act like that wasn't sticky coverage. I mean Kaiir Elam was probably an inch away from deflecting that ball.

"I thought his run defense and his tackling was really good in this game. And so I don't find myself down on Kaiir Elam. I find myself optimistic with a young player that I think just needs reps. And I think he should absolutely be given an opportunity to be the starter next year.

"Again, certainly didn't feel like it was this disaster performance that I think some people are feeling like coming out of the game."
