He was no deer in the headlights out there. Too handsy? You can make the case on that - but I thought the refs called it more than tight. Not controversial in my opinion. He was absolutely solid. Im actually shocked to see all the people denigrating him. 1 1 1 Quote

He had several good coverages. No one noticed. 2 Quote

So why should he get a free pass? Quote

I won’t pretend that he was perfect today, but I have more hope for Elam after the last two games than I have ever had. He was lockstep with his target the vast majority of the game. He made some mistakes with becoming frantic when he lost track of the ball, but that sort of thing typically gets better the more you actually PLAY. What were you most disappointed with? I genuinely don’t see what made him so awful in many people’s eyes 1 Quote

Sure, but it's nitpicking. He just got done on a great play there. That's fair. I guess I'm just looking at it in the context of his game as a whole. I've been guilty of this too where we just keep lowering the standards for him. So now a play where he gives up a TD is seen as good tight coverage and he just got unlucky to be beat by a depth caliber WR. I'm over the mitigating factors at this point. He is what he is which is a player that gives up a lot of chunk plays. It really frustrates me because I can't even pinpoint what is going wrong. Like I said the flashes have been there. He is just beat too often. And it isn't just in zone, even in man which is supposed to be his strength he is regularly getting out leveraged and then either giving up a catch or committing a penalty to try and make up ground. And in coverage his two PIs were just awful technique. They weren't becoming frantic to me. They were bad fundamentals showing themselves up in high leverage situations. Quote

FWIW, I don’t think McD and co know exactly how to help Elam at this point. He’s got too much wrong place wrong time in him. The anti-Bernard Quote

He was like white on rice with his receiver the whole game. His main problem is freaking out when he doesn’t know where the ball is. His fundamentals break down. It’s like a QB who is good until he is blitzed. The fundamentals are the first to go when you are scared. Thats why he started faceguarding his defender that led to him touching them and getting the PI’s. He loses track of the ball, even though he is right with the defender, and he gets scared. Know what helps all this though? More experience. Edited 5 hours ago by Einstein Quote

I didn't see a replay. They called him for making contact with the receiver before the ball arrived. They never showed a good replay of it and I'm still not convinced the receiver wasn't jumping backwards due to his own momentum and Elam's tight coverage just made it look like he initiated contact. 1 1 Quote

He doesn’t get his head around and that’s getting called every time. He’s all over the receivers tugging and holding even if the ball has no chance of being caught. It’s been 3 years and it’s like he just came into the league. This coaching staff can’t get through to him, because he’s a physical guy who can run. Quote
Beast Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I thought he was fine. That first TD he had pretty good coverage but Maye threw the hell out of that ball. Quote
Billl Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago (edited) 2 hours ago, HappyDays said: I mean that I don't feel confident either Elam or Douglas are CB2s. Douglas almost certainly will be back as the starter there once he's recovered, I thought there was a chance Elam could steal the job but he was just okay last week and bad this week so that seals it. I wasn't happy with Douglas' play in his last couple games either though. I'm worried he hit the age 30 wall and can't hang with NFL athletes. When it happens it happens suddenly. Elam’s the better of the two at this point. Douglas can’t commit PI because he isn’t within arm’s length of the receiver. If Kaiir can just dial the grabbing back a quarter turn, he might get away with some of it in the playoffs where they tend to let you play a little more. Rasul was worn down by the end of last year, and he’s worn down this year. Edited 4 hours ago by Billl 1 Quote
