Well, at the end of all these posts you just have to ask yourself,  do I feel good about this D heading into the playoffs?  I sure as Hell don't.

Exactly. Which is why I want change and McDermott to take over. This defence doesn't have much of a pulse the last 3 weeks

The last three games have come down to onside kicks for the Bills.

Our DL is a hot mess. I really dont understand the constant need to rotate players out. No one is beating their man straight up and sacking the QB. We seldom run any stunts and our 3rd down D is very troubling. Like VERY troubling! They are blitzing more but still not getting home.

I sense teams have enough film on Babich now with his tendencies and they are exploiting it. McDermott and him have failed to make any adjustments.

The Bills are very fortunate to come away with a W. Maye made two bad decisions with the INT in the EZ and a behind the line pass to the RB.

Again just an all around bad game by the coaching staff and players!

My worry with this is most of last year McDermott trying to do two jobs was doing neither particularly well. I don't want to split his focus.

I am anti almost every single one of your views on D.

DL rotation is just the modern NFL. All the best teams do it.

Same with zone defense. It is absolutely the rule not the excpetion to be a zone heavy team in the NFL in 2024.

The Bills best player on D is their nickel corner, and it is a big reason for staying in that package to keep their best player out there.

And I think the talent IS the issue on D. They have Groot and Ed up front who are talented but have at different points been inconsistent. They have Taron who is great and Bernard who is good. Then they have Benford who is very good. Around those guys they have holes and/or question marks.

You just named 5 guys on the starting defense that are good and saying talent is the issue. Both our starting corners are excellent. Milano is a literal all pro probably the best off the ball LB in football. Bernard is excellent.  I love Dorian Williams. Rapp has been very good. Taron Johnson might be the best slot corner in the league. Von Miller is a first ballot HOF and Rousseau is good. The players aren’t the issue. The coach is

Fair but Don't you think it's worth the gamble though? IMO it's gonna come down to the defence, and it can't look too much worse than it does right now

Milano needs to prove he is still that guy

Von definitely isn't still that guy

Williams still makes as many mistakes as he makes plays

Rapp has had a decent year but is a borderline NFL starter talent

Douglas is not excellent and has struggled this year.

No. I don't. I think I'd rather keep the HC doing that and hope Babich has a couple of good plans up his sleeve for the playoffs (and has his starters healthy to execute them). He has had some good games this year. The last 3 weeks have not been kind to him.

To me, that is the percentage play.

Any game/half/whatever amount of time where Spector is starting to let injured guys heal up should be taken with a grain of salt.  I know people say injuries don’t matter yada yada but he is absolutely horrible and all teams are doing is picking on him lol

Idk how many pff nerds there are out there this isn’t gospel but just to put it in perspective they’ve got him as 177 out of the 178 linebackers and I am scratching my head trying to figure out who’s worse 😂. This isn’t even hyperbole I think he might be the worst player in the nfl that has seen significant time.  Swap a lb out for Spector on any team and they are immediately a pretty bad defense at best

second half of the lions game and a big chunk of today was the pick on Spector show…I think we would’ve looked a lot better the last few weeks otherwise after getting embarrassed by the rams at full strength more or less

Out of curiosity, where do you feel like the game was too much for McDermott calling plays and doing game management though?

Losing to KC in the playoffs wasn't  because McDermott had too much on his plate IMO.

If anything I feel like he's had more blunders this year with game management

I mean the amount of times I have said it personally is prob less than 5x but I hate the defense. I hate almost every single thing about it. I absolutely complain about the rotation and gameday roster management more. I constantly say to put a 3rd LB on the field and come out of nickel. I barely ever complain about the soft zone but I’m not really here to defend it. The defense is absolutely terrible and is keeping us from winning a Super Bowl. Every week I hope if Changes but it doesn’t. We have good player on the defense…it’s not them

Do we though? We have solid players but we’ve lacked  true difference makers on D for a number of years.  Unfortunately, it rears its ugly head all too often. Our Safeties are Meh, our LB’ers struggle with physicality and EVERYONE on our DL goes missing far too often. When’s the last time, our DL dominated a game under McDermott? For all the resources and capital invested,  it’s been a major source of disappointment.

Is Von playing at a HOF level?

Milano has played 2 games this year.

What makes Rapp very good?  Our safety tandom is average at best.

Rashul is not excellent.

Rousseau is good.  We have 6 other DL.  We don’t much interior talent on the DL.

We haven’t had a dominant pass rusher this year.

Dorian flys around but man, he is out of position a lot and you can get him on misdirection.

Don't think the defensive game planning was as good. I thought he struggled to make in game adjustments. I didn't think his game management was as good and I felt like the team never felt like it had a real unified purpose until the very end of the year and the culture had taken a knock. I thought he was doing two jobs at 5/10. He did find a groove at the end of the year with it. His defensive playcalling certainly improved post the Denver disaster. But I don't wanna throw that at him again 2 weeks out from the post season.

I really don't know the first thing about calling and NFL defense but I do know that what you can do changes when four starters are out. Normally they'd disguise and change up their coverage looks thru the game but it seemed like without Rapp, Hamlin, and Douglas they weren't able to do that. Instead they dialed up more blitzes and odd man rushes than any other time this season.

The biggest difference has been their difficulty in getting off the field in 3rd and long situations. For the last few seasons they've been pretty solid with that but there's been some regression this year. It's a real nard-kicker when the opponent is at 3rd and 12 and they sneak past the sticks for 13 or 14.

For whatever it's worth, a defensive play won the game today.

If your main concern goes back to his defence as whole, I'll go back to my main point.

The defence sucks now, so how much worse can it get?

If I misread your post and you're more 50/50 with his defence and management last year , then my bad

They are number 2 in takeaways.

Takeaways are one of the key elements in winning.

The Bills are 12-3

my worry just remains whether that’s sustainable - pass rush tends to be the biggest indicator. Hot and cold there; so I’ve continued to imagine we end up closer to middle of the pack. But here we are deep in December at 2.

Not a Babich fan if we don't win it all we will be talking about him. Either he needs to get much better or we need better. Injuries or not... just my opinion

Haven’t we had a turnover in every game but one?  Seems kinda sustainable thus far. 🤷‍♂️

It's a combination of personnel and coaching and scheme. And that's why when it looks bad, it looks really bad IMHO...

There were so many plays to point to today on Defense if you want to get frustrated... But I'll tell you the one that drove me the most crazy, and it's plays like this that always drive me insane with this team. The Bills have the Pats pinned at their own one and it's 2nd and 10... The Pats line up in Shotgun so they are going to let the kid pass out of the endzone... If you don't want to call a pressure on that play... OK... But what the Bills do...what they ALWAYS seem to do to drive me insane. The CB drops to beyond the 1st down marker and they give up a free and easy 7-8 yards making the 3rd down much easier... A play later it's 1st and 10... And that happens over and over and over again with this Defense... Free yards... And teams know where they can get them and how to get them off this Defense and the scheme. How many 3rd and 7-10's do we see an open receiver 5-8 yards down the field who turns and gets a couple yards easily to keep the chains moving? I get McD's Defense is predicated upon keeping the play in front of you but teams are well onto that now and it's just too easy...

And don't get me started on anything misdirection... Oh my...B-)

He was a terror tonight; he embarrassed the RT all night long.

That was the very best I have seen him moving since the injury.

He was disruptive for sure, but a bit hard to quantify it as apparently that NE right tackle according to Joe Marino is downright awful
