My comp around when he was drafted was John Elway. He runs far more than Elway did and is far more athletic, but if Elway came up in this era, maybe they'd look a little closer.

Allen had his " Elway the drive" literally twice in the 13 seconds game... 

 

To me that was the game that made me say Allen was the Elway of this era

I am going to go with Randall Cunningham. They both are equipped with a cannon arm, elite athleticism, and an uncanny ability to escape the pocket under pressure.

 

The only differences are Josh is much bigger 6-5 240 to Cunningham 6-3 212, and more driven to be the best where the knock on Cunningham was he was more interested in the fame than being great.

 

However, Cunningham played in a time where the rules were different...QB's and WR's were not protected like they are now, and coaches did not use the QB as a dual run/pass threat like they do now.

 

I think if you "time-machined" an in his prime Cunningham to the present, he would be the third best QB in the league right now behind Allen and Mahomes, IMO.

Athletically Josh reminds me of a super-sized Elway and/or a more athletic Big Ben. I also agree with those who mention a (super-sized) Brett Favre because Josh used to be 100% gunslinger before he evolved into his more cerebral self.

 

As a runner (stylistically) the only comparable is former Chicago Bears QB Bobby Douglass who in 1972 rushed for 968 yards in a 14 game season (69.1 ypg).

 

Douglass was a big, rawboned midwestern farm boy who had size, straight-line speed, toughness, and instincts. He snapped arm tackles and overpowered DBs, outran LBs, and played with reckless abandon. He could also throw the ball 80 yards in the air... just a big strong country boy. But he never learned to play QB... he was a football player playing out of position.

Bruce Smith. Dominat at his position.  Played in a 3-4 and still beat double and triple teams.  Yet, Reggie White was always talked about as the premier DE that played in 4-3 defenses which created easier mismatches for him. 

 

You can compare Bruce's career to Allen's as they both were not in ideal situations to excel,  but their individual talents and drive made them great.  

 

Like Bruce, Allen is doing more with less, but others are talked about as being better but their systems and surrounding talent are never brought into the conversation.

IMO he looks like Brett Favre with an actual football IQ. He still plays with all of those signature attributes. The other aspect that is similar to Favre is how much fun they both appear to have playing the game. How many times in the last 2 weeks has Allen rolled to his right and uncorked a ball across his body back towards the middle of the field. He just doesn't do it into traffic any more. He doesn't force things like he used to. Unlike Favre, Allen matured and learned to get out of a bad play and get to the next down. He doesn't live and die with every down like he used to. And he seems to finally have abandoned the "always look for the TD" mentality and has learned to let the game come to him.

Haven't looked at every post but the best comparison I can think of would be Andrew Luck.  Allen is a better runner but Luck was no slouch and they both are amazing passers.

Every great player is unique so there is no clear comparable. Obviously Elway and (a more athletic) Ben R. Now that he's less of a gunslinger I wouldn't compare Josh to Favre.

Before his career was derailed by injury Bert Jones was pretty much the best and most dominant player on the field. Tough as nails and a great passer.
