There was a Hills department (actually discount) store on Dick Road in Cheektowaga. We used to play drunk, late night touch football in their parking lot under the lights. The striping marked our sidelines. This was in the late 70s, early 80s. 1 hour ago, chris heff said: A Vienna Sausage is what you have, a foot long is what I have. The clerk, a recent immigrant from South Asia, said "no sir you will have to pay $2.50 for that". At which point the old headbanger retorted with "$2.50"!!?? "That's highway robbery"!!!!! and stormed away! Fast forward to my first trip to Highmark in more than 10 years back in October and my astonishment when I asked the beer dude how much was a Tallboy of beer and he said $21!!! $21 for a Tall boy of beer!!!! Now thats "highway robbery"!!! Your post reminded me of this classic movie scene. Trivia question: who is the ice cream stand clerk? Quote

Cheektowaga, Depew, Fredonia, the Jamestown one you mentioned, the North Tonawanda one Freddie's Dead mentioned, what else?. Not sure of the others There were other department stores too likes Ames and Zayre, before Walmart moved in. Don't forget The Big N! The Neisner brothers were ahead of the game... 1 Quote

There was one in my small town. And a McCrory's and Woolworth. And a Sear's catalog store, JC Penney catalog store, and Montgomery Ward's catalog store. And a Present Company (most people here probably don't even know what that was!...or a catalog store). Times have really changed. Edited 19 hours ago by chongli 1 Quote

I had always called it "pop" in WNY growing up, but when I moved to New England for college, I learned most people called if "soda" and I quickly adapted. Now "pop" sounds weird to me, lol. 3 minutes ago, Tenhigh said: You must have lived in Manhattan with all of those stores! Ha! C.Biscuit97 Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago I love the Ralph. But walking through slushy corridors when it’s 20 degrees and having to pay $15 for a beer or $10 for a slice of pizza is robbery. It’s gross and awful what they do to people. Quote

Times have really changed. As for discount stores, those growing up in Buffalo are likely to remember Twin Fair and Gold Circle. Interestingly, while on the discussion more and more brick and mortar retailers are adopting the "catalog store" model that the long-defunct store, "Brand Names" used. Best Buy is a good example of this... many of the products are not displayed in a way that you can touch or see them, you order at a counter and they bring the product out to you. Going a step farther at some locations you pick up the product in an encoded locker outside the store. 1 Quote

Relatively sparse (as all NFL stadiums are, frankly). But it seems weird for what is easily the premier and intended use of the stadium (Falcons games), the shop is closed. Quote

But it seems weird for what is easily the premier and intended use of the stadium (Falcons games), the shop is closed. The Cathy family is highly religious, and that is their prerogative. The MSL games are played there as well as a lot of other major events like the SEC Championship and other college games. MLS games are roughly 2-3 times a month at home from late February to October, and they are PACKED and rockin’! They do screen off the upper bowl, but I’d still say way more people attend MLS or “other” events than Falcons games over the course of the year. They have a half dozen days blocked for FIFA World Cup coming up as well. The Falcons are only good for 8-10 games a year, and not always on Sundays. Having the closed shops on Sundays still serves as a form of marketing, just like the many billboards they have around town. I don’t think the Cathy family or their franchisees are hurting in any way, and I respect someone who is willing to stand on their principles rather than try to take in every single dollar possible. .
