Learn something new every day

I’m very familiar with this rule

free quick is rare but not new.  It usually happens at end of half or end of game. Houston could have tried this against buffalo with the situation of buffalo deep in their end stvthe end of the game creating an uncontested kick.

I've been aware of that rule but that was the first time I saw it come into play.

That's gonna give the Chargers a lift... as Payton said the Broncos are gonna have to be ready because the game changed complexion a bit.

On a punt if you call a fair catch you can do a "fair catch kick."

If you fair catch a punt you are allowed to do a free kick to kick a FG.

This can be done whenever you fair catch a punt, but obviously most teams don't want to kick a FG in first down so it's primarily used in end of half situations.

Defense must line up 10 yards back and you kick from the spot of the fair catch, no need to snap the ball.

Chargers punt returner had his fair catch interfered with, which is a 15 yard penalty and an untimed down since the clock was at 00:00.  LA elected to try a free kick instead of a hail mary.

Fair catch was called

Iirc technically you can attempt a free kick any time you call a fair catch

Just rarely happens because most fair catches occur outside FG r as nge

"Taking the team from San Diego to Los Angeles would be roughly like taking the Bills to Rochester. I'd be pissed off but I'm not sure I'd abandon the team... and if they still had Josh I'd still cheer for the team."

Trust me, having lived in the area LA County, Orange County hates San Diego County and vice versa. I mean hate.

LA thinks San Diego people are a bunch of bumpkins stereotypically.

If Rochester had an NFL team and Buffalo did, it would be the same way.

Same with Dodgers and Padres, close in proximity, but zero love lost for each city.

Can fair catch a kickoff too

Part of the reason why they kick on side kicks into the ground instead of a really high short one
