Look at the splits Dion Dawkins is lining up with.. he's been doing it all seas

 

Easily the widest split from a left tackle throughout a season in a decade.. he plays on an island has world class technique and is now a dominant Force ahead of the curve

 

 

I'll be honest, I get why this takes skill and is uncommon, but I don't understand the practical use for it?

 

I could see on passing downs it taking away sneaky inside moves.

Im not an Oline expert but wide splits actually allow for offensive lineman to reach in zone run concepts much easier . O Line are taught to reach with their inside should to the breastplate of the next defender to the side zone is being ran. If the case Edwards is going to reach to the LB after getting his hands on the 2I and McGovern will take the 2I defensive tackle and they will take them where they want to go. This is where you hear the word Duo blocking being used by commentators.  If outside zone, Dawkins will take his reach and get to the breastplate like Edwards. If it’s inside zone he’s going to walk the DE out. 
 

A LB stepping up into the gap really doesn’t change anything besides Edwards staying on Level 1 versus going to level 2. As for passing game this is why there are many protections and def pending on who else is coming they can slide, halfslide, of split protect where Davis takes the blitzing LB through the gap. That’s where Allen and QB play matters 

 

I also notice in all 3 of these pictures Dawkins and Edwards are on the weak side of the formation because the DT is in a 2I and then he is in a 1T in the other two and looking at the way the Lions are aligned weakside zone would kill them

I've already heard whispers in football circles that he is considered well well well above what the media and pundits think and if he plays at this level for another 3-4 years he has a chance

 

Unfortunately they are among the HOF voters.

 

Maybe if he plays another 8-10 years and he racks up more accolades (he has only 3 Pro Bowls, a single "All Conference" All Pro (PFW only) he has a chance to enter at least a discussion about it.

When I say pundits and media I mean like sports center talking heads and Nick wright

 

Not an AP writer with a HOF vote... I do realize the media does pick the Hall OF Fame but it's a very select few with good credentials 

 

Not like a sports center pundant who just throws stuff at the wall

There were times we used wider splits when running the ball back in Daboll's days when we were in spread to create more room for our pretty vanilla inside zone runs.

 

But just having Dion with the wider split is a bit different and he also does not line up as far back from the LOS as other LTs in the league.

 

There was a time when OTs would line up fairly deep from the LOS so they could better contain that outside rush from gaining the edge.

 

NE OL used to remind me of a phalanx of Canadian geese.

 

The NFL cracked down on that in the off season as they are supposed to be lined up on the LOS, but they allow for some leeway now and probably more subjectivity than any of us like as to when they will flag an infraction.

 

Supposedly OTs must have their helmet aligned with at least the belt line of the center to avoid being flagged.

 

First Dion has to be very light on his feet to make this work. I know he likes to get his hands on defensive lineman and engage as soon as possible.

 

Perhaps the wider split would make it harder for defensive lineman to create as much confusion with protections when running stunts and twists.

 

Maybe just a personal preference... (Why Dion why??) 😁
