I went over to JetNation forums expecting to see outrage and calls for Woody to sell the team.

While there's certainly some of that, I'm surprised by how many people there were doubting the article, casting aspersions on Diani Russini and Mike Silver, and in some case saying it seemed outright made up.

I understand that when so much of your identity is wrapped up in a team, it can be hard to accept such a huge death knell for its success: That you have awful ownership and team culture. So the most logical defense mechanism is to just say it's all lies and fake news and go on thinking you're a year away from success.

All I can say is that where there is smoke, there is usually fire. The articles about the Bills being a toxic dumpster fire and having awful culture that proliferated prior to McBeane wound up being right on the money. Admitting it, rooting it out, and rebuilding from scratch was the only antidote.

Maybe Bills fans were just as quick to dismiss those articles when they came out as Jets fans are to dismiss this one now. The general thrust of the Russini article rings true to me, though, even if all of the specific details are not 100% accurate.

2004: I blame Donahoe for not having the guts to offer enough to get into the top 10 & draft Roethlisberger.  Remember, we started at 21 & went all the way up to 7 to draft Josh because Beane was willing to toss the draft value charts aside & do whatever it took to get his QB.  There's no way that JP Losman would have ever been a decent starter in the NFL.  He just didn't have it-he had one of the most respected offensive minds in the NFL coaching him, Sam Wyche, and couldn't be developed.  Jauron hired the right guy to develop Losman & JP didn't have the goods.

The Losman trade cost the Bills the chance to draft Aaron Rodgers with the pick that they traded to Dallas.  So they did F up picking a great QB when they had a real opportunity to grab one.

None of the draft capital from the Mahomes trade was used to draft Allen.  Allen's trade involved 1st trading our own pick 21 to Cincinnati with Glenn to move up to 12 & then dealing our own 2nd rounder & the 2nd rounder acquired from the Rams in the Watkins trade plus pick 12 to move up to 7.

Passing on a relatively easy trade up to get big Ben when he was perfect for buffalo and everyone knew he was a baller was a gut punch.

I literally had a draft party with friends and fully expected buffalo to get big ben and have him sit behind bledsoe for a year.

I still hate we screwed that up.

Sounds brutal for that franchise. Woody may be a bottom-5 owner in the league. But I’m happy they are in our division.

that being said, Hackett is terrible and should be fired so woody was right in that part

I think its sounds wonderful. Woody is an outstanding owner who is doing right by the Jets. IMHO.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6005172/2024/12/19/woody-johnson-jets-madden-sons/

‘Woody Johnson decided to do his own research.

The New York Jets’ owner was at his house in Palm Beach, Fla., last February, discussing potential offseason acquisitions with team decision-makers as they watched game tape. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, a former Denver Broncos first-round pick, flashed on the screen. Jets general manager Joe Douglas expressed interest, according to someone familiar with the meeting. Johnson took out his phone and started typing.

A few weeks later, Douglas and his Broncos counterpart, George Paton, were deep in negotiations for a trade that would have sent Jeudy to the Jets and given future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers another potential playmaker. The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why.

Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in “Madden NFL,” the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources. The Broncos ultimately traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns. Last Sunday, Jeudy crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career.’

the minute he brought up Madden is the minute I would have resigned...

Rest easy…if that had happened, we would not have drafted Josh Allen…

Rodgers and Johnson spoke on Oct. 7, just after the Jets lost to the Vikings in London to drop to 2-3, a game behind the Bills in the AFC East with Buffalo coming to MetLife Stadium the following Monday night. According to a team source, Rodgers implored Johnson to remain patient.

The following morning, Saleh called Rodgers to let him know he was demoting Hackett and installing passing game coordinator Todd Downing as the new play caller. Rodgers made it clear to Saleh that he did not agree with the decision — so much so that Saleh told his staff to get backup Tyrod Taylor ready to play in case a banged-up, disgruntled Rodgers wouldn’t, according to a team source.

Shortly afterward, around 10 a.m. ET, Woody and Christopher Johnson, Woody’s brother and the Jets’ vice chairman, walked into Saleh’s office. Woody told Saleh he was fired. Saleh asked why. Woody told him he didn’t think Saleh could turn the season around and that the team needed a spark. Then the Johnsons walked out of the room.

This is why the Jets are a mess.

They were 2-3 for crying out loud. win 2 games and you're 4-3 and right in the AFC playoff picture. They had a real shot at beating the Vikings, who are one of the NFL's top teams, and just came up short at the end of the game.

I checked out JetNation as well and was able to read the whole article.

The following excerpt, especially the last part, is insane:

In 2022, quarterback Mike White played through broken ribs in a late-season game against the Seahawks with postseason hopes on the line. White played poorly; the Jets lost and were eliminated from playoff contention. After the game, with the quarterback in the showers after throwing his helmet to the locker room floor, multiple Jets players said they heard Woody Johnson say, “You should throw your helmet, you f—ing suck.” The statement got back to White. The team spokesperson said Johnson apologized to the quarterback, who declined to comment for this story.

In the postgame locker room after last year’s Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, multiple players said they heard Johnson’s sons loudly disparaging certain Jets players.

I'm betting everyone of those players wanted to beat the living piss out of those punk sons.

It wasn’t a relatively easy trade up. For all his fault, Donohoe tried to get in position to take Big Ben, but nobody was budging.

NYC radio was ripping him this a.m... They have no chance of landing a top tier HC/GM

Sorry, I disagree.

1) As the old expression says there are only 32 slots available .  2)  Expectations are so low and the potential to turn the franchise around in the media hub of NYC will draw a lot of interest.  Look at the old Blowhard Rex on-air begging for a HC slot there.

😂

The NY jets not only passed on the greatest QB that's ever lived in 17, they passed on another top ten all time QB the very next year in 18

They then tripled down and instead of being patient and surrounding Darnold with competent coaching and talent, they traded away a good legitimate starting QB in Darnold.

It's astonishing levels of incompetence

They had 3 chances at an 83/04 QB class, and screwed up each time

Passed on mahomes

Passed on Allen

Traded away Darnold

The 18 class is living up to all the hype as it was compared to the 04/83 class

Allen and Lamar both first ballot Hof QBs

Baker and Darnold are legitimate starters and pro bowl level QBs

Pretty embarrassing for the jets to repeat history of 1983 again and again 😂

They also passed on Dan Marino in 1983 for....Ken O'Brien!

They didn't budge because the price wasn't paid. Everyone and everything has a price. Tell me that a decade plus of Roethlisberger wouldn't have been worth whatever it took to move up.
