Warcodered Posted December 18 Posted December 18 It makes me wonder about Penix that they waited this long, like if he's clearly better you go with him. 1 Quote
Ridgewaycynic2013 Posted December 18 Posted December 18 Cousins drops 'You Like That?!?' as a catch phrase. Starts looking for other teams, and adopts a theme song: Quote

mannc Posted December 18 Posted December 18 Just now, Warcodered said: It makes me wonder about Penix that they waited this long, like if he's clearly better you go with him. I don’t trust the Falcons to know whether or not Penix is ready. No one knows until he gets out there. I suspect the only reason Cousins has started this long is his contract. Quote
Doc Brown Posted December 18 Posted December 18 So, with Kirk they're 7-7 with a cupcake schedule, pry won't make the playoffs, and will likely have a $65m dead cap hit next year if they can't trade Cousins. Last year they were 6-8 at this time so it cost them $90m for one more win. If Penix doesn't work out this will be an all time gaffe of a contract. 1 1 Quote

If Penix works out, its all good. If he doesnt and they choose a bust at 8 instead of Bowers or Oduze for their very shiny new QB.... Morris will be looking for a new job very soon Atlanta couldn't decide if they wanted to compete this year or build for the future. Its why they came down to BB and Morris at HC and then signed Cousins and drafted Penix. Its why you saw the owner and GM having a very intense convo after the Penix pick was announced. I like Penix, I think he could be Tua and maybe even a better version. Atlanta has a great roster, but if this doesnt work, it was an extremely poor use of resources on a team that could have won an otherwise, pretty mediocre at best division I get your point but considering what we went through before Allen, I don’t fault any team for trying every option they can to find a qb. Cousins, at worst, is a good guy for a young guy to learn from. Penix isn’t making anything for qbs yet. It’s weird how qb is the most important Position in sports but some folks act like the Falcons did witchcraft. There will always be WRs and other players to put around the qb. penix is a very pure passer. His injuries terrify me but odds are he’s better than this version of Cousins. 19 minutes ago, Doc Brown said: So, with Kirk they're 7-7 with a cupcake schedule, pry won't make the playoffs, and will likely have a $65m dead cap hit next year if they can't trade Cousins. SageAgainstTheMachine Posted Wednesday at 07:49 PM Posted Wednesday at 07:49 PM I can see it plain as day. The Jets get off to a 3-1 start next year with Cousins at the helm, as Jets fans dive head first into “You like that” memes. They proceed to scuttle to a 7-10 record. Quote

I would think the purpose would be to... play football instead of retire. He's going to be 37, and while im sure its tempting to get paid not to play - if he does that he'll likely never play again. I don't think he earns some big contract elsewhere, but i think he can get that 27.5M into like 35 on a 2 year deal - they can then spread the hit over 4 years (3 years when void years trigger). Giants/Raiders/Browns might all try and get his services imo. Quote
gonzo1105 Posted Wednesday at 08:13 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:13 PM I’m surprised they did it at 7-7 but he had been really bad but there is no going back now to Cousins it’s Penix job. Cousins will land on his feet and get another tidy short term deal im sure or gets traded 1 Quote
TheFunPolice Posted Wednesday at 08:29 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:29 PM (edited) Watching the QB series on Netflix gave us all a lot of insight into Cousins. Family guy, major goal is to win a SB, wife's family is all near Atlanta, and according to Spottrac he has earned a total of $294 million in his career, counting this season. Plus Atlanta will owe him another $28 no matter what unless he retires, bringing him to $324 million earned by next spring. To me, that adds up to not wanting to move his family again a year later unless it's for a real chance to win a SB. He isn't going to a rebuilding team. He has made a boatload of money, and at this point he could just stay put as a backup in Atlanta, keep his kids in their new home instead of packing up and moving again, and make $45 million as a player/coach for Penix unless Atlanta cuts him, in which case he gets his guaranteed $$ and can decide to go anywhere at any time. One thing you have to respect about Cousins: he has definitely maximized his compensation given his skill level. $324 million for a decent, but not spectacular, career.
