On draft night when they turned in the card season 8 episode 20 GIF by SpongeBob SquarePants

I think it makes perfect sense now.

They had a roster ready to compete for the playoffs. Kirk was the best FA QB on the market, but coming off injury.

They double-dipped the most important position.  This is exactly why you do that.

I think they got cute and tried to do what the Packers do with Rodgers and Love. If Penix works out, its all good. If he doesnt and they choose a bust at 8 instead of Bowers or Oduze for their very shiny new QB.... Morris will be looking for a new job very soon

Atlanta couldn't decide if they wanted to compete this year or build for the future. Its why they came down to BB and Morris at HC and then signed Cousins and drafted Penix. Its why you saw the owner and GM having a very intense convo after the Penix pick was announced.

I like Penix, I think he could be Tua and maybe even a better version. Atlanta has a great roster, but if this doesnt work, it was an extremely poor use of resources on a team that could have won an otherwise, pretty mediocre at best division

A shiny new weapon at 8 wouldn't have helped them because Kirk has played terrible....

Prioritizing getting a good QB over more weapons for a bad QB who sucks is literally the best use of resources in the NFL.

Very shocking.

I initially was negative on drafting Penix after signing Kirk, but this is exactly why you do it.

That's ballsy decision with Falcons still in playoff hunt.

This ensures that Cousins won't have another employer in the NFL.

Not all season tho. He had multiple great games this year including a 500 yard 4TD day in October. I stand by the fact it was a poor use of resources. If they had any intention of getting a 1st round QB (and 6 went in the first 12 picks) they should have signed a lesser FA to hold the seat until the new guy was ready

What a ridiculous contract they gave a 36 year old QB coming off an Achilles Tear...now it's an albatross for another 3 years.

If they trade him this offseason, it'll only be about $7M more in dead cap than we had on Diggs this year.

At least two weeks too late, but at least they did it.  Wonder if the owner had to step in…

It’s strange how similar Cousins is to their prior QB Ryan. Identical size, same arm strength, same other abilities in their prime, same limitations, identical rate of decline. I keep forgetting that Ryan has retired and that Cousins is a different person.

Cousins has always looked better on paper than on the field.  He parlayed a mediocre career into a stat boy's dream & enough GMs bought it to make him a very rich man.

I remember in 2018 there were plenty of posters on Bills message boards advocating for the Bills to sign Cousins & save all their draft picks.  I was rooting for the Jets to sign him since I'd seen enough of his pumped up on paper career to not want him anywhere near the Bills.

Cousins is a classic example why I've always dismissed QB stats in favor of visually evaluating a QB.

No but he's gotten worse, he has thrown 1 TD to 9 picks in his last 4 games and looks completely immobile out there.

You can't say "any intention to get a 1st round QB" then talk about how 6 went in the first 12 picks. They had no guarantee that one of their top prospects would be there at #8. For all we know, Penix was their #3 QB on their board and when he fell, they had to get him. The reports out of ATL was that they completely fell in love with him pre-draft.

Ultimately, it's working out for the Falcons.  If they don't draft Penix, they have a 37 year old, declining Kirk Cousins under contract, another .500 record, and are poorly positioned to get another QB they may or may not even like in the upcoming draft. Today, they have a top 10 pick at QB who has been sitting and learning the system and hopefully is ready today.

The way things played out, imo, strongly supports everything they did.  Just like the Packers drafting Love, despite paying Rodgers.  Obviously it depends if Penix works out, but they may make a lot of people look silly.

Achilles takes time, and for Cousins it's just over a year now since his injury.

Rodgers is just starting to get back to form. In his last 2 games he's thrown for 628 yards, 4 TD and 0 INT. Rodgers also got hurt much earlier than Cousins, and he had a different surgery that speeds up recovery, whereas Cousins went the traditional repair route.

I think next season Cousins will be back more to normal.

Atlanta is going the Green Bay route and trying to rebuild while winning. It only gets you so far, assuming it works at all.

Now, what if Penix struggles and looks bad? Do you pull him and switch back?

Hopefully for them Penix does well and it's not an issue, but then you have this guaranteed contract with Cousins.

yea, I mean cousins arm should look a little better once his foundation is ready for the rigors of an nfl season. What will be interesting is if they cut him, pay the guaranteed and someone else gets him really cheap. At league minimum salary he could land a lot of interesting places

Loved it the moment they drafted him. He’s still a rookie, but kid is gonna be really good if they keep a really good offensive line in front of him.

SF if they don't sign Rodgers. Given Rodgers much better play lately and stated desire to stay on the Jets it's more likely than it was that he remains there.

Can't see SF paying Purdy. Poor guy had his moment but it came too early in the contract cycle.
