1) Is this guy holding the football?  Y  -> Nail Him  N -> Don't care

    

2) Is this guy in the way between me and the guy who is holding the football?   Y -> Nail him  N-> Don't care

 

3) Is this guy good looking?  ->  See 1) and 2) above

I’ll continue to say - if that’s not motivation to practice fielding the ball cleanly, I don’t know what would be 

 

the hands team should have voluntary practices to just hurl the ball at each other

Have friend whose son was elite rugby player in HS and club player in college and afterwards.  Plays wing. 

He also played WR on a championship winning football team in HS.

 

Can confirm.

This was probably 20 years ago and for him a cup was mandatory.  With that said, the NFL is a weird place of alphas who I guess dont like protection (as evidenced by Tyreek Hill and his particular disdain for any type of protection lol)

They should not put Johnson in that spot. Get someone like Coleman there.

That was a really interesting kick, relying on the kicker to time up a hit perfectly.  I wonder if it’s common for teams not to have their best hands guys in that spot

The main strategy has been bouncing the ball really high pass 10 yards to allow our guys a chance to hit the guy who's in the process of catching the ball to jar it loose. The counter measure nowadays for the receiving team is to have first line guy blocking the incoming guys to allow the "hands' guy have a clean catch. In my view, the Hollins onside kick is a lucky one, not really that clean.

 

The other strategy is squib kick aiming for the ball and the player arriving at the 10 yard line at the same time. The receiving team player can move forward attack the ball before 10 yard mark, but the ball is bouncing off the ground with unpredictability, making the ball catching difficult. Johnson had the ball bouncing of his face mask. Again, not clean.
