Power Rankings

The three teams ahead of us all do have a better record.  We are #2 in Athletic rankings behind Eagles

 

Rankings are also based a lot on "what have you done for me lately" and 2 weeks ago the Bills lost.  Without that loss they'd likely be #1 as they were #2 in a number of polls after beating KC and SF.

SI has the Bills at (1); CBS Sports has them at (3).

I think the top 4 are in their own tier and pretty interchangeable.

 

Bills, Lions, Eagles, and Chiefs. 

 

Obviously we're the only team with victories over the Chiefs and Lions, but we do have the most losses. 

 

Now, if someone were to rank us outside the top 4 I'd have some fighting words for them. But I won't be upset at being ranked #4

I always thought "power rankings" were pointless since they are always correlated to Win-loss record. Anyone can just look that up without needing someone to write a column about it.

Isn't that, though, the idea behind power rankings?  It's not about win-loss records and more about which team is actually the best?

 

According to ELO ratings (which are used to rank chess players but can also rank any other competitive sport/game), the Bills are #2.  They have Josh rated as the #1 QB.

To answer the original question what can’t the Bills do?  Don’t inexplicably give up 44 points and lose to the Rams.  Beating the lions did not wash away that sin for the power rankers.

Anyway, I just happened to look at ESPN's power rankings.  Bills are fourth.  That's okay, I guess, and I don't really care, but it strikes me as really odd that the Bills beat both the Chiefs and the Lions and both teams are still ranked above the Bills.  What are they supposed to do to be recognized for what they are?

 

I don't know - maybe the both of those teams ARE better than the Bills, but it seems to me some leaps of faith have to be taken to reach that conclusion. Like, Patrick Mahomes is the next Tom Brady, and his team is ALWAYS better because they have Patrick Mahomes. Or, the Lions are everyone's favorite story this season, so they must be better.  

 

Just keep winning. 

 

Yeah, that was ESPN.  Another ranking I saw had the Bills at 2, behind only Philly, and I thought that was right.  The power rankings should reflect how well teams are playing NOW, not how many games they won or lost in September and October.  The Bills might be playing the best of any team right now, or maybe not considering all the yards and points the D has given up.

 

The thing is that rankings have nothing to do with who's going to win a particular game the next time out.  Good or bad schemes and injuries can overwhelm any supposed advantage.

Not so much. Power rankings are more of a week to week snapshot than a cumulative season award. Those early losses are far in the rear view.
