Anyone else want to keep seeing Elam and Bishop on the field after yesterday?

Fortunately I think he can; and the best way to practice that might be to get him "up to speed" over the next 3 weeks.

Douglass and Hamlin will be back... against the Patriots and Jests let these guys learn... maybe sub the above two in on 3rd down and long... but yes get the guys more experience and even get Hyde in there for some reps.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I do think the defensive philosophy was to make Detroit work for their yards and avoid big plays. Other than St Brown’s long one, which was actually a pretty lucky play that it didn’t get tipped, the Bills made Detroit work for their scores.
 

Meanwhile, Allen was eviscerating the Detroit D quickly and efficiently. Detroit burned so much clock on their final drive, which played into the Bills’ hands. 

 

Both defenses had depleted rosters but Buffalo was able to hold Detroit off early in the game and that was the difference.

Channeling my inner McD I would not play a rook like Bishop who has had limited playing time in his complicated scheme in any meaningful game, certainly not in the playoffs. The fear is that he would be beaten cleanly like Williams did to him yesterday.

I’d like to see bishop get some meaningful snaps vs the pats-  maybe not the Jets. More experience the better

 

I’ve long been a huge Douglas supporter but he was pretty bad vs the rams and has had his fair share of bad plays over his last few games.  
 

I may prefer Elam vs pass heavy teams and Douglas vs a team that prefers to grind out first down after first down

Personally, I thought our secondary just looked so much faster yesterday than all season.  Obviously Bishop and Elam are a big influence there.  But aside from speed, I thought they played pretty well as the game began in particular. 

 

Elam was only targeted a couple times in the first half and even though St. Brown got a couple catches there Elam tackled him for very short gains.

 

Bishop gave up a longer pass to St. Brown, but soon after Goff threw a bomb to Williams who looked like he kinda torched Bishop at first and then it seemed at first he just dropped the ball, but after watching a few times it looks like Bishop's athleticisms helped him to recover enough to get a hand in there and maybe break up the pass. 

 

In the first half, Goff was 11/20 for 2 TDs and 161 yards, but he was 2/4 for 15 yards in the 1st quarter and was sacked twice and then the Bills were up 14 points.  One of those 2 completions was on a 2nd and 18 dumpoff to St. Brown where Elam was right there and tackled him for a short 5 yard gain.

 

After that point it just felt like our D knew how inevitable Allen and the offense were so it was fine to let the Lions become one dimensional and play them the way they did.  Even with all the completions and yards for Goff, there were still a lot of plays where the defenders were close to making a negative play.

IMO, the young guns and Hyde should all play a bit over the next 3 weeks. 

 

This stretch is the stretch where if we have a 10 point lead vs NE or NYJ, I’d like them to get some game experience.

We are going to see Bishop and Elam play often over the next 3 weeks as McBeane will want to see what these guys can do to help evaluate them for next season.  
 

That said, McD and Babich will want the best players out there until the seeds in the playoffs are set.  Hamlin and Douglas are the best options if available.

I'm not sure I sit Hamlin and Douglas because of anything I saw on the field Sunday.  That said if someone said Elam and Bishop are the future of our secondary I'm not upset about that.

PFF said Elam had the best pass coverage grade on the team [not saying much when you give up 500 yards].  Second was PS callup K. Jackson.  Bishop, Milano, Bernard, and Spector all had coverage grades in the 30's and 40's.

Yeah, that’s fair, he did end up with not a bad game but the first half wasn’t great and I think the improvement you saw in the second half was more of them just choosing to abuse the Spector/Bernard combo lol

Tough call on Elam. Not that I think he was great, but Douglas was a big part of the problem against the Rams. Don’t know if he was injured or what, but he got smoked on the regular.

Douglas was excellent, but his play has dipped pretty severely over the last few months.

Considering our last 3 games are fairly meaningless (yeah yeah #1 seed, I know), I wouldnt mind these 2 seeing way more playing time.

 

Bishop is just going to take time, and the more time we get him now, the sooner he develops. None of our Safeties played well early in their careers. Not Poyer, not Hyde, not Hamlin. All took them about 4-5 years to really click. Get Cole going now.

Elam and Bishop have something in common…….They both look great when they look great. The highs are great, but the lows are the kind of thing we try to avoid.  Wisely, I might add. Elam may be getting there, but I’m not as sure with Bishop. Get everyone healthy and play the guys who make decisions we can trust.
