I have been very pleasantly surprised by Hollins.  He has made some big plays on offense and special teams and is clearly a leader on the team.  I think he is easily the best player the Bills have had in this role during the McBean era, and they have tried a few.

He is a much much better version of Kumerow. He is a near perfect 5th WR.

Trying to say he is better than Gabe Davis is not true. Davis had between 35-48 receptions every year he was with Buffalo. Davis was far more productive but aside know had inconsistent hands. He could make the amazing catch and drop the routine ones.

Fair, re Gabe vs Mack, but what would Hollins numbers be if we had to pretend he’s a WR2 all season?

Might be higher but team would be worse. 

When did this offense explode? When they added Cooper and Shakir was healthy.  Yeah I know no targets for Cooper this week but he had 14 last week. My guess is the defense is accounting for him and that has opened up things for others.

Mack is producing 50% more than I thought hecwould, he is excellent in the run game, and appears to be a great locker room fit. Probably couldn't ask for a better FA singing for the cost.

Im definitely not advocating for Mack to be used as a 2.. more pointing out that Davis was.

Yeah I hear you. After the 13 second game I'm sure most of us thought we had a superstar #2. Very good player while he was here. Just too inconsistent.

Okay, this is actually an insane play.

 

Squares up on a linebacker, wins handily, and wins so completely that he's still fully balanced and in position to keep the corner away from the play while still blocking/obstructing the linebacker.

 

That's an elite block.

One thing that can't be understated is his ability to draw defensive pass interference flags. That is certainly a WR skill. It has been a LONG time since we had receivers who were good at drawing those flags. Hollins does a good job at that.

I'd take Gabe as a WR4 over Mack but only in that role.  Gabe was just as beloved in Buffalo until they increased his usage.

It’s all about roles though. If Hollins is a supposed to be a top 3 wr, that’s not ideal. But when we got Cooper, it drops everyone down and Hollins as a 4th wr/ red zone/ STer is one of the best in the league at that role.

He isnt a star... but I love having this dude on the team and his energy...   removing Diggs energy and inserting Hollis energy has been a big plus I think.

Hes big and physical that causes issues and defenders to panic 

 

also his run blocking sets them up and he can double move (panic again)

Mack H is a Super Bowl Champion in 2019 with the Eagles and brings an attitude to the locker room of a winner.

Mack should always have a place on Bills.

But we've had big, physical receivers and TEs before who have not been good at drawing PI. You have to do a little acting. You have to play back through the defender for the ball. It's something you have to actually work for.

 I share your questions.  

 

Brett Favre was a noted trash-talker.  One of his OL was being interviewed and said he was always telling Brett "Brett, I gotta block this guy, Don't Piss Him Off"

 

On the other hand, I remember a mic'd up episode with Jordan Poyer where he was constantly yattering at the receiver he was covering "I'm here.  I'm right here.  I'm right on your ass, 18."  

 

I'm honestly not sure what World Class Trash Talking contributes to the team.  I know on an individual basis guys do it to crank themselves up.

So he's tracking toward like 30 grabs and *maybe* 400 yards.   He's going to be 32 next season.  How much do you think that pays?

 

Age and modest production aside......the saying in pro sports is that the more things you do........the less you get paid.  

 

I could see him back for a very similar contract.  No more than 1 or 2 years.

 

He may be more valued by certain coaches but their GM isn't going to pay him good money to block, play ST's and be good at scramble drill offense for a type of QB they don't even have.   And again, not at that age.

I was totally wrong on him.  He runs every route like it is his last.  Great blocker, catches almost anything going his way and solid on ST.
